We had the good fortune of connecting with Porsche’ Sterling and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Porsche’, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I originally started my first business selling lashes my freshman year of college. I am a first-generation college graduate. My family didn’t have a college fund waiting for me once high school was over. I knew that I would have to work my way through school. I decided what better way than to work for myself ! Most of the girls that lived in my freshman dorm didn’t have a vehicle or any other way to get around to get what they needed for college weekend nights. I saw that this was a HUGE need and I wanted to fulfill it. I started selling lashes, then I branched off to clothes because the mall in Huntsville, Alabama was horrible ! They only had a Forever 21 and a Victoria’s Secret. I wanted to become a one stop shop for the women on Alabama A&M’s campus so I started selling hair as well! With my businesses doing well and many people telling me I inspired them to start their own, I decided to give digital products a try to spread the knowledge that I acquired through trial and error with businesses I created.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Right now I have three businesses that I have been putting my focus on. That is my hair company (Luxe Ebony Extensions LLC.) , my styling business (EB Throwing Fits) and the launch of my digital product business (It Girl Digital Products). I took a hiatus from my businesses to focus on finishing college. Now that I am done, and I have more free time that has been my main focus. My goal is to have my business up and running again by the beginning of 2025. I’m really excited to introduce my digital products to the world because I have put years of research and time into this guide. It isn’t something I bought from someone else and turned into my own. All of the knowledge provided in my digital products is my OWN. One main challenge that I faced was trying to balance school life, work life, and running multiple businesses. Being in school and trying to maintain any business let alone three is a struggle within itself. I’m glad that I took the time that I needed to wrap up school. The biggest lesson I learned was to not quit on yourself because if you don’t trust yourself enough to know that your business will succeed then no one else will either. I want the world to know that no brand has a perfect story, but my brands story is FAR from over.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love Atlantic Station ! I feel it has so much to do, and is the perfect place to take someone visiting from out of town. Some of my favorite spots in the city would be the rooftop at Ponce City Market, Krush Lounge, HonKnob Tavern, and The Bank just to name a few places to hang out. Some of my favorite restaurants in the city are Frost Bistro, Toast On Lenox, and Suite Food Lounge.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to shoutout my mom ! No matter what business idea I came to her with, she has always supported me and saw the vision I had for each business that I created. She never discouraged me, she always encouraged me and told me I can do anything I put my mind to. I owe all my credit to her, many times when I wanted to give up she kept me going.
