Meet Pernell Marsh | COO, VMG LLC

We had the good fortune of connecting with Pernell Marsh and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Pernell, what role has risk played in your life or career?
When it comes to risk, I consider myself a calculated risk taker. I really want to know or discover how the opportunity will be an asset more than a liability to me in the present and in the future. In choosing entrepreneurial endeavors in life I have used the strategy of having my full time job yet a side endeavor to pour into. That way if that opportunity doesn’t work out I will have income coming in, but if it does and it does better than my job, I can focus on that opportunity full time.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ll share how my creative side, my professional role, and the business I have help build all intertwine in my story.
Music has always been an important aspect of my life and soul. When I was ten my parents sent me to Southern California to spend a summer with my relatives. After that summer, that’s when I began to fall in love with Los Angeles and the entertainment industry.
Growing up, I played the violin from elementary school thru my first year in college. In high school and college, I dabbled in poetry, vocal percussion, singing, songwriting, rapping, free-styling, and performing. It was in high school, college, and after college that my musical pallet began to evolve to many genres and styles of music.
After graduating college, I became a Page, worked at a late night TV show, and eventually was given an opportunity at NBC Universal in Entertainment Marketing. What I have learned in this department over several years has helped tremendously form how I see and think about execution of creative projects.
After college, for fun I would pursue my creative endeavors of creating music. I made a mixtape of sorts with a few songs of me rapping and beatboxing. A friend of mine passed it on to a music producer (now my best friend and business partner), who eventually heard it and after some hilarious discoveries decided we should try and make some music. Well, due to his commitments at the time, we would make a song here and there. This lasted for about a decade. Then we started working together more intentionally around 2017 and then around 2020 he asked me to join the rebuilding of his music production company. These events catapulted me to today where I am a fractional COO for a music production company that makes in house music for diverse media, primarily TV, film, and advertising.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Without my parents and my relationship with Jesus, I wouldn’t have the opportunities I have today. I was blessed to receive the opportunity to go to school in California even though I lived in Colorado at the time. Coming to California to pursue the dream of working in entertainment was something I had my sights on since the age of 10. I credit my parents for getting me to Los Angeles and for God to pave the direction forward to connect with impactful people along the way.
