We had the good fortune of connecting with Perissa York and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Perissa, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I embarked on a career as an actor because it allows me to delve into the depths of self-expression, self-discovery, and profound connection. Through my craft, I’ve found a medium where words often fall short, yet emotions resonate deeply. Connecting with others through art is where I feel most alive, where I can transcend boundaries and truly communicate from the soul. It’s a journey of exploration, both within myself and in the connections forged with those who experience my work. Acting isn’t just a profession; it’s a profound means of communication, a pathway to understanding, and a way to touch the hearts of others in ways that words alone cannot capture.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Navigating an acting career has been a journey filled with its share of challenges and rejections. Despite the numerous setbacks, the affirmations and opportunities I’ve received have outweighed the disappointments. While I haven’t yet reached my “big break,” I’m profoundly grateful for every individual I’ve encountered along this path. From commercials to short films and stage plays, each experience has contributed to my growth as a creative. There was a time when I placed immense pressure on myself, feeling as though time was slipping away, but I’ve come to realize that I am exactly where I need to be at this moment, trusting in the timing that the universe provides.

The pursuit of my acting career has demanded sacrifices, including relocating three times, with Atlanta, GA, becoming my current home base. Amidst the challenges, however, I discovered a new avenue of creativity by founding LunarSKN, my jewelry business. This venture has provided a harmonious balance, granting me the autonomy to work for myself while continuing to pursue my passion for acting. I am grateful for the lessons learned, the growth experienced, and the opportunities yet to come.

I want to share a message with the world: I am proof that regardless of your background or beginnings, you have the power to turn your dreams into reality. As a girl who came from humble beginnings, I’ve faced challenges and setbacks, but I’ve also embraced opportunities and pursued my aspirations with unwavering determination. I stand here today as living proof that no matter where you start, no matter how big your dreams may seem, they are achievable. Believe in yourself, work hard, and never let your circumstances define your potential. Your dreams are valid, and with perseverance, they can become your reality. So, to anyone out there with a dream, remember: you have the power to make something out of nothing. Keep pushing forward, because the world is waiting for you to shine.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Atlanta is truly a vibrant city, rich in creativity and steeped in Black culture. As someone originally from Minnesota and having attended predominantly white institutions throughout my life, immersing myself in the diverse and culturally rich spaces of Atlanta has been a transformative experience. I am immensely grateful for the abundance of opportunities this city has to offer.

If my best friend were visiting Atlanta, I would eagerly take them on a culinary journey to some of my favorite spots. We would indulge in delicious meals at places like Cultivate, Hippie Hibachi at Chattahoochee Food Works, Plant Based Pizzeria, Ponce City Market, and Chi Chi Vegan.

Exploring the city wouldn’t be complete without a stroll along the BeltLine, where we could soak in the energy of people biking, skateboarding, and enjoying picnics in the park. In the summertime, hiking at Stone Mountain or Kennesaw would provide the perfect outdoor adventure.

For a night out, we’d have plenty of options for entertainment. Whether it’s enjoying games and drinks at Painted Duck or Main Event, catching a movie at Silverspot at The Battery, or soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of Midtown, there’s something for every mood and preference in Atlanta. The city truly offers a dynamic and unforgettable experience for anyone looking to explore and indulge in its diverse offerings.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude to my family. Coming from humble beginnings, they have always provided me with unwavering support and the freedom to pursue my creative passions. As the first artist in our family, their encouragement has been instrumental in my journey. I am especially inspired by my mother, who single-handedly raised my sisters and me with grace and resilience, despite the challenges we faced. Her strength and determination with the limited resources we had serve as a constant reminder of the power of love and perseverance. My family’s belief in me fuels my creativity and drives me to reach greater heights. I am endlessly thankful for their love, support, and belief in my dreams.
