We had the good fortune of connecting with Paula Cherie and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Paula, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I worked a corporate job for years but I decided life was too short to continue doing something so unfulfilling, so I studied marketing and created a plan to leave my corporate job.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The year was 2009 and I was creating a pin up calendar for charity.  I was charging so little that I was practically paying people to take their photo.

I’d put an ad on Craigslist for “models” and drive all over the state to do ladies’ hair and make-up, set up my portable pin-up set, and take hundreds of images, looking for that one stand out image that would go into the calendar.

It was a crash course in retro pin-up make-up and hair, photography, and business.  Hundreds of hours went into creating that calendar and I only sold around 50 copies, but by the time I was done, I could create a victory roll in my sleep.

I decided to get a studio of my own and went in on a place with my friend to cover the rent.  It was in a strip mall in a less-than-appealing part of town.  Pin up was fun for a few years but in 2015 I wanted to stretch my legs a bit more creatively.

Boudoir seemed to be the place to do that, since its message is inherently about empowerment and building confidence. It was there that “Boudoir Betty” was born. I went full-time with it and here I am today, still empowering women.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
As a recent resident to Middle Georgia, I’m still learning my way around but I’d say a visit to Society Garden in Macon is a must-do. The Crooked Finger Brewery in Dublin, GA offers a wide variety of IPA’s and food trucks. When you’re done there, visit the Fly Bridge rooftop bar also in Dublin. They typically have live music on weekends. Later, you’ll be hungry again, so go to Sea Shells in Dublin, and catch some karaoke or play some pool after you try their low country boil.
No trip is complete without some shopping. Dublin has its share of cute boutiques, including Gee Gee’s, Hello Sunshine Co., The Caboose, Blush, and Southern Belles.
Catch the Farmer’s market on the weekends, or an event at the Dublin Theatre. Page House B&B offers a monthly paint and sip so you can bring out your inner artist.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d have to thank Jose Gomez, creator of Tampa Bay Society of Photographic Arts. I learned so much from going to the meetings and hanging around other artists. I’d also like to thank Karina Velez, who is and continues to be business marketing goals. She pushes me to do better, and thrive an in environment that is currently struggling in this economy.
