We had the good fortune of connecting with Paul “Baby Paul” Hendricks and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Paul “Baby Paul”, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I started my own business in 1995 inspired by my late grandmother, Inez Lewin who was the most spiritually grounded person in my family.
After working as a music producer delivering records for both major and independent music labels like:
Nervous Records, Big Beat Records, Def Jam, Atlantic, Warner for about 5 years making money for all these companies with my hard work, I decided to be as self contained as possible with my career and set up a music distribution and marketing company aligning my talent with my extensive network and resources.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a music producer, independent record company owner, and Deejay.
I am most proud of my work as an independent record label owner, having secured major distribution deals with companies like: Universal Republic, E-One Music, 300 Entertainment.
I came from the school of hard knocks, starting out as a beat maker and eventually learned how to make records to earn the name “music producer” developing songs by artists within various genres, which was not easy it took time and persistence to grow into having the creative insight and skillset that I have today.
Over the years I learned that having a solid network of professionals that can provide the proper resources to market and distribute music is essential to becoming successful.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love Atlanta, the real estate value compared to cities in the northern part of the country is lucrative.
As far as my favorite places to go, I love to shop at Atlantic Station for my sportswear Adidas, Nike, Jordan, and I love to go Lenox Mall for my luxury brand items such as Ralph Lauren, Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs,
I love the food at “Old Lady Gang” restaurant owned by singer songwriter Kandi Burrus from the legendary group Xscape, located in East Point, GA.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to thank my music industry mentors:
artist manager – Damien “Deo” Blyden who was the manager for legends like Heavy D, AZ, and was also an A&R for Motown records back in 2002.
record company executive – Neil Levine who is the founder of Penalty Records, the music company behind hip-hop legends Nore, and David Banner.
