Meet Patrick Downer | Filmmaker, community activists & photo studio owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Patrick Downer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Patrick, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process of starting my own business came from just wanting to do my own thing and creating something that I can have as I get old and possibly give it to my future family.
I was always the type that didn’t like working for someone. Not because of some hierarchy reasoning, but because I was always working under someone in a position that I didn’t love being in.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a filmmaker & film photographer. This is the first thing that has my love in this new world I’m in. My style is derived from 90s New York and that feeling of nostalgia. In my photography, I love set designing and creating a new world with my touch and style on it. As a filmmaker, I love that nostalgic feeling as well but with a meaningful story behind it. Whether it’s a narrative or a documentary.
I got into this world after I got back from college and my dad gave me a camera. I started shooting and saw that I wasn’t good at it, so my competitive nature kicked in and I put in the hours and days to get better. I then decided I wanted to make films and short documentary’s, so I got into the filmmaking world and loved it ever since.
Thankfully YouTube university has put me ahead of where I need to be at. That resource has changed my world.
From there I realized, if you want to get something done, just do it. Yes, it may take time for you to understand your purpose if you get distracted. But never lose that focus on what you want to do and you’ll see overtime everything moving into place. It just takes dedication.
My brand is for the people. The community, for myself. If I’m not representing the Bronx through my work, then I lost my identity.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If one of the homies was pulling up and we had to stay in the Bronx for the week, I would bring them to these places.
– van courtlandt park to chill out and relax. Maybe play some games.
– Kingston bakery on white plains road to get the BEST Jamaican Patties
– Caridad on gunhill road near allerton ave to get some good Spanish food.
– Jerry’s jerk food truck to get some of the best jerk chicken and jerk pork.
– Bar 47 to get a drink and catch up and vibe.
– Richie Richie if you want some good Jamaican food from the oxtail to the stew chicken.
These are not in particular order.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a shoutout to my friends and family that see me, see my vision, see the work I put in, and believe in me.
I also want to thank the strangers that know of me through social media but still show support.
Lastly, I would like to thank the universe for teaching me patience and showing me what needs to be done for my future.
