We had the good fortune of connecting with Patrice Roberts and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Patrice, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
My business helps the community or the world by teaching my community that self care is important. Taking care of ourselves is highly important and not to feel guilty about it. A lot of people in the African American community weren’t taught the importance of self care..how it’s important for the body as well as the spirit. In my profession, I take care of everything that I possibly can. I teach my clients that your whole body needs to be taken care of regularly. There are parts of ourselves we neglect. I teach people what I wish my mother or mother’s mother would have taught me. What I’ve learned is that you can’t teach what you don’t know.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business is Esthi Moon, I’m a Licensed Esthetician & Yoni Steam Practitioner, I love working with Crystals for the tranquility and Herbs for the skin. I love helping my clients achieve healthy skin as well as healthy skincare habits. What sets me apart from others is that I believe in taking care of the whole body. I take care of my clients from head to toe . I offer feet, back, and butt facials as well as traditional facials. I started my business as Sai’jo Stonez working with crystals because the crystal Rose Quartz, helped me overcome my heartbreak from a miscarriage. Then I became a Yoni Steam Practitioner because I wanted to help women that were experiencing problems with infertility, fibroids, heavy menstrual cycles, a stopped cycle, etc. I learned about how different herbs could help my community heal naturally. Also, my kids and myself included have sensitive skin. The products I tried didn’t help so I began creating my own skincare products. From there I wanted to get into skincare deeper as well as waxing so I went to school. Getting started was not easy, I’ve paid for all of my equipment myself.. no loans, no grants, no family assistance to start up but I would do it all over again. I have loved ones that have helped purchase items for my suite along the way and that’s been a saving grace. I invested in myself and it’s been totally worth it. The lessons I’ve learned so far in business is to focus on you and where you are starting. Don’t compare yourself to others in your industry that has had a few years of a head start on you. Do your research about what’s best for you and your business, & take time for yourself & family. We can’t do everything in one day & especially by ourselves. We need to carve time out to relax and spend time with our families and to rest. I want people to know that there are no excuses, if you truly want to accomplish something then you will find a way..even if it takes a little longer than expected. I’ve been through a lot in my life..abuse, a drug addicted parent, I’ve held crack in my hand at 14 yrs old because my parent was so desperate they sent me to get their drugs. I didn’t let any of that stop me from trying to be successful and give my kids the stability I never received. It’s not easy being a small business owner, having a family and raising kids. You want to be present in both areas at all times and sometimes you can’t. At the end of the day you find a way to balance. It’s all worth it, my kids are worth it and so am I.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First, let me say, I’m an introvert that loves to eat lol

My itinerary would include Flemings, Half Shell Oyster, Crab Barrack, & Pappadeux. We could get drinks from any of the places above however, I’d prefer to drink at home. We would also go hiking at Ruffner Mountain. It’s amazing to be outside with nature. I find it very peaceful. After the hike we would check out Magic City Nutrition because they have delicious healthy shakes & teas. I’ve put a few of my friends on at that place and everyone loved their drinks. Of course, my best friend would have to come to my suite for a facial. It’s necessary to take care of your skin at all times. My suite has a peaceful vibe there, we could have some deep conversations or she could just relax.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to shout out Mrs. Delores Armstrong. She has her own insurance company selling Farmers insurance & other insurance to the community. From personal insurance to commercial insurance. I worked for her as an Insurance agent and hearing her congratulate other women for stepping out on faith and starting their own businesses was very inspiring to me. I took her advice even when she didn’t know I was listening and she’s helped to get me where I am today. Also, my team of encouragers, supporters, social media team, models, whatever I need them to be. That would include my best friends April Smith & Corneilous Woods. They have been there every step of the way, they have purchased items to go in my suite, encouraged me when I doubted if I was ready to open out of fear, & they continue to motivate me now I’m opened. I’m truly thankful for them. Also, my Esthi sister Ashanti Jordan. She has been so amazing in being my support system & helping me genuinely. We bounce ideas & information off of each other. She keeps it real and I love her for that. Even though we’re in the same industry there is no envy or jealousy, it’s all love. We want to see each other succeed and continue to grow. Also, my Fiancé, Anthony Jones. He has been my backbone throughout this process, from school, to state board, to opening up my suite. He listens to my ideas, my rants, business plans, & etc. He encourages me and has been in my corner every step of the way. Also, my future mother in law, Rosie Jones. She is always in my corner & she’s an amazing grandmother. My uncle Kenneth Roberts, has been a battery pack to encourage me as well. He’s a DJ in South Carolina, and seeing him hustle & grind motivates me. Not only is he a DJ but he just opened a restaurant selling the best barbecue. Whenever I need a “pick me up” conversation he is always there. They’re all apart of my team that I could not thrive without. I’m so thankful for them.
