We had the good fortune of connecting with Palash Gandhi and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Palash, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
Production Design and the Film Industry work on a very time-sensitive schedule where a lot of money is at stake. Designing a new world every time in a limited time frame with the authenticity of the architecture has always been a challenge. Jumping from an Architectural background into a fast-paced industry has been a wonderful and breathtaking journey. Risks have always helped me move forward in my life, look at the world in a different perspective, and take up new challenges.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
With a strong architectural background, I respect the elements that form a design. Seeing those basic forms of shapes clubbed together to create intricate details and patterns in Indian Architecture has always interested me more than anything else. Along with patterns, my roots come from a culture that celebrates colors. Each color when combined with another color or material forms a completely new experience. My designs usually respond to the feel of a space and the intricacy of the smaller details that come together with the use of various patterns and materials.

For me, Architecture was the primary stage where I learned about how to feel and design a space. Post which while working in the Bollywood industry for about 4 years, I experienced how I could use the knowledge I learned in Architecture and create temporary spaces that are creative and realistic. I was really lucky to be mentored by Nimish Kotwal at the right time, who made my journey extremely knowledgeable and fun.

I believe in keeping things simple but detailed.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take my friend to a small city that I visited during one of my Architectural college trips, Mandu. Mandu is an ancient fort city in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. This city elevates your experience the most during the rainy season, the beautiful ancient structures are designed to celebrate water and worship gods. The lush green nature enveloping these old fort ruins makes you feel one with nature. I would simply visit “Bawdi”(Stepwell) eat some local dishes such as Poha and enjoy the water flowing through the channels designed within the structures.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
It was mainly my passion for creating worlds and my love for films that drove me toward what I am today. I would dedicate a shoutout to my mother who played a vital role in supporting financially for my graduation studies and my mentor Nimish Kotwal, under whom I learned and understand the basics of Production Design.
