We had the good fortune of connecting with Oz Nesbitt, Sr, and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Oz, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
Public Speaking is still ranked as one of the top three fears and phobias in the world. Over time technology and social media has just about wiped out human and social interactions. People simply don’t talk anymore therefore, most people don’t know how to effectively communicate. Whether it’s just everyday “table topics”, resolving an issue or dispute, to making a presentation in a corporate or workplace setting, learning how to articulate your message and delivery is essential to your overall success.

Today, people are super sensitive and loaded with emotions that are not being managed and, in some instances, out of control. Placing an order at your local fast-food restaurant can turn into a nightmare, the worst day of your life because of one primary ingredient… TONE. We’ve all heard the old cliche’…it’s NOT what you say, it’s how you say it. Well, I’ve since added this quote…It’s also WHEN you decide to say it. Timing and tone are EVERYTHING when it comes to effective communication. The most skilled athlete on the gridiron doesn’t know how to properly deliver and respond to the sports reporter after scoring a major play, winning or losing a game. The athlete is not required to become a “public speaker” however, he or she does need to know how to posture and articulate an effective delivery that could possibly land them their next major career opportunity.

Speak Up Communications, LLC specializes in removing the negative emotions that often trip people up when simply just talking. Table Topics, front of the room presentations, to workplace delivery, to quality customer service experiences. One on one coaching and tutorial opportunities or group classes that will impact multiple people at once. At the base, core, root of EVERY problem is COMMUNICATION or a lack thereof.

We create a better and more positive world when we learn how to talk.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve been in the “people-business” for forty years. I became a young Sheriff’s Deputy at the youthful age of 18 years old in 1985. I spent 15 years of my young adult life in law enforcement. Most of my professional employment has landed me in supervisory roles and or positions of leadership. I also worked in public schools as a “teaching assistant” or para-professional, In-School Suspension (ISS) Instructor, ,9th grade basketball coach, auto sales as a salesman to sales manager. In most recent years, 2008-2024, I’ve served my local community as an elected official, County Commissioner to Chairman/CEO of Rockdale County Government, one of Metro-Atlanta’s twelve metro counties.

My gift of effective communication has made plenty room for me and afforded me the opportunity thrive and become successful at meeting people right where they are. I call it the “People-Business”. Although sometimes dealing with people is both challenging and rewarding almost at the same time, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I love people! Real world life experiences is what sets us aside from other communication companies. We keep is real, raw and relevant!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Red Phone Booth upscale cigar lounge would definitely be on my list. One of the city’s great places for brunch, Nana’s Chicken-N-Waffles, my church, Beulah Missionary Bapt. Church. and we would also visit The Battery, Braves Stadium and The King Center.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My “Aunt Mattie”. Mattie B. Burney, my dear aunt, retired educator, was the most influential person in my life. Aunt Mattie was a champion for education, especially with assisting young black students with the opportunity to further their education by enrolling in college. Aunt Mattie exposed me to church, people and community as I would trail alongside her to various community functions and events. Teaching me how to present myself to others. I also learned from just being present, being exposed to multiple settings in our community, watching her naturally work a room and how she interacted with others.

My SHOUTOUT goes to my “Aunt Mattie” FIRST. I also shoutout my community mentors, Former Georgia State Senator Charles W. Walker, my high school Principal, Mr. Marion E. Barnes, my hometown church and former Pastor, Beulah Grove Baptist Church, and Dr. Sam Davis, Augusta, Ga. Last be certainly not least, my hometown hero, the late great Godfather of Soul Music, Mr. James Brown.

There are so many people who played a part in me becoming the man I am, including my wife, Robernett Nesbitt.
