Meet Nyesha Stone | Founder and PR Director

We had the good fortune of connecting with Nyesha Stone and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nyesha, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I never initially wanted to be a business owner, especially of a media company. I started Carvd N Stone in 2017 when I was attending college at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. By my junior year of college, I was getting paid to report and write for local Milwaukee newspapers and magazines. Within just a few months to a year, I noticed how negative the news really was. I hated how reporters, especially those around me, covered the city of Milwaukee, so I decided to interview people for the good things they were doing. Years later, and Carvd N Stone has turned into a positive media outlet not just for Milwaukee but the rest of the world. I started Carvd N Stone to change the way people thought of the media, and to also change how the media interacted with the community. As journalists, we should not only be connecting with communities when something tragic or “out of this world” is happening. There is other news out there that matters and that’s what Carvd N Stone is here for. We are your weekly source of positive news.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Carvd N Stone has been around for five years! I never imagined the things Carvd N Stone would do. At our base, we report on positive news through online articles and video interviews. We also offer provide PR services for organizations that include articles, press releases, newsletters and media trainings. But we are so much more than that. I am most proud of Carvd N Stone for our efforts and impacts in the community. Our articles have gained people attention that has brought them sustainable income and business. Along with our positive coverage, we’ve awarded over $17,000 in grants and scholarships. I understand how hard it is to get someone to fund your dream or vision, especially as a Black woman. This is why CNS focuses on awarding money to Black creatives, specifically women, to let them know that someone sees their hard work and supports them. Honestly, the hardest part about running my media company is that so many people just don’t get it. I get asked all the time “why positive news?” And all I can say is “why not?” We need to start questioning why as a society are we okay with traditional media mostly exposing hate, scandals, killings, etc? Media is very important. It is a main way to how we gain access to the world and what’s going on. I want people to really understand that what Carvd N Stone is doing is bringing hope and showing that there is still good in the world.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m not from Atlanta. I’m born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I recently moved here two months ago to have Carvd N Stone become local in the Atlanta area. But, I’ve been coming to Georgia since I was 16 years old. I have a few favorite spots, but I for sure need to get some more. When my best friends come into town I am going to take them to the Georgia Aquarium. I absolutely love aquariums and have been to the one in ATL, Milwaukee, Chicago and Tennessee. I also want to take them to Stone Mountain. I went there a few years back on July 4 and it was AMAZING! I went hiking then saw a light show on the side of the mountain. I would also take them on a walk in the downtown area. My friends know I love being outside and there are so many restaurants and bars down there that we can just go bar hop or something. I have a lot more to learn about Atlanta and I can’t wait. I need suggestions too!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are a few people who deserve shoutouts in my life. I’ll start with my granny Sandy Stone. She instilled in me what it means to be a hard worker and to never depend on anyone. Since I could remember, she has been the woman of our family and she still is. She taught me how to read, how to bake, how to get good grades and to be a good person. My granny deserves to be taken care of and I’m definitely working on it. I also want to give a shout out to my mentor for being hard on me when it’s needed, but for also bringing me into rooms that I didn’t even know I needed to be in. He taught me how to be a real business woman and how to carry myself as such. I appreciate his bluntness and most importantly his work ethic. He never sleeps. I also want to give a shout out to my nephew Donte, my niece Kailany, my brother, my sister, my mom, my dad and my real friends for letting me complain whenever I need to. For letting me be me even when I don’t always know who I am. You all keep me grounded and humble.
