We had the good fortune of connecting with Nya and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nya, why did you pursue a creative career?

I had always known that I didn’t want to attend college. After graduating high school, I convinced my parents to allow me a gap year to figure out my path in life. They agreed, but it came with adult stipulations. As long as college was off the table for me, so was their wallets. I worked two jobs and could barely make ends meet, and that was while I was living at home. That’s when life got real.

After countless hours with God trying to understand my purpose, my path was revealed…ENTERTAIN. Say what? Me?

After reflecting on life, I realized it made sense. After all, I performed the most ridiculous song while playing the keyboard in front of my Pre-K class.

I accepted the mission. I ventured into modeling and took on as many background roles as possible to acclimate to the environment. I loved it. College became heavy in my spirit. Me? A college student? Okay, God. You’re funny, but I hear You. I enrolled in Clayton State University’s film program, where I’ve learned the vibes behind the camera and gained knowledge to enhance my skills in every department.

I am proud of my progress thus far, adding actress, model, content creator and college graduate to my resume.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
About my art:

I am most proud of having a consistent job in the entertainment industry and starting a production company with my family.

It definitely was not easy. The no’s were plentiful and discouraging, but that one yes made me feel that everything I sacrificed was not in vain.

Lessons:

Be you, be transparent, and show up as your authentic self. Be open to constructive criticism and always come with a positive attitude.

I would encourage the world to not wait for an opportunity to be handed to you; start creating your own.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I spend a lot of time on set, so I don’t get out in the city much. When I do get breaks, I’m usually traveling or in my hometown with my family. But given the chance to have a friend tag along, I would take them to a WNBA game, a Kansas City Chiefs game, or chill at the house with my colorful family, playing games and eating some good food.
