We had the good fortune of connecting with Nova Jay and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nova, let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
I want to create work that will outlive me. I don’t want to just be remembered as a model , I want to be remembered as an artist. And a good person
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My purpose sets me apart. There’s a lot of people who get into this profession for superficial reasons , they do it for vanity. Modeling to me has always been a true art to me. I spent years studying the original supermodels, fashion and design. I studied visual arts and even some photography. I learned color theory , i know what looks good to the eye and I use that to my advantage in my work. It’s important to me to have extensive knowledge in anything I commit to.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would definitely have to museum hop. The Warhol and the mattress factory would be the first stops. I eat a lot of Mexican so Old México or Alquisiras Paleteria in Beechview would be the food spot. For fun we could go to Zone 28 and finish the day off with desert from Happy Day.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Precious Jackson , she’s the author of “Conservation of Love” and someone who always pushed me to get to where I am. Martell Hardy. He’s an artist, photographer and I’m lucky enough to be one of his muses.
