We had the good fortune of connecting with Nonso Emefo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nonso, why did you pursue a creative career?
I would say I pursued a creative career because of the visions and ideas I constantly think of everyday. I would be cheating myself if I didn’t take the time to bring those creative ideas to reality to have everyone else feel and/or see what I experience. Throughout most of my life, I never really felt people really saw that side of me since I was more a reserved personality. Pursuing this field would give people the chance to see the true person I see every time I wake up. Lastly, I’d say pursuing this career gives a chance to bring my story in a new direction that maybe not anyone would ever think of. The goal is always to create dialogue and conversation for years to come.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Personally, I believe the direction in which I’m deciding to take my photography is what I’m most excited about. The purpose is to create art that sparks emotions, conversations or different viewpoints of what is presented in front of you. Being able to be where I am is a blessing of course, but it was not easy at all. It has been constant battles within my own mind about thinking am I good enough or do people appreciate my work ? I learned that deep down you have to create what makes you happy at the end of the day. You cannot create what other people want to see if it’s not bringing a new type of energy to your own heart. I want the world to be able to know that the work presented in front of them comes directly from the heart. Its purpose is to connect with each and every person who comes across it.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would say I would take them to probably Ponce City Market or Little Five Points
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would say my family of course, and the close circle I have around me. Each and everyone person has motivated me to be better than I see myself. Looking at their lives and examining what each person likes gives me more ideas and thoughts to pursue through my art.
