We had the good fortune of connecting with Nita Sizzahanz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nita, why did you pursue a creative career?
I chose to pursue an artistic/creative career, because these aspects have always stood out to me in life. Doing hair was something that I knew that I wanted to do from a young age (at least 5-7 years old). I have always had a natural knack of anything artsy or expressive. Drawing and painting, playing multiple instruments in middle school, singing, etc.. Anything that allowed you to express yourself and or tell a story with your gift. When I got older, and got closer to Christ, it transformed to “how can I use my gift of doing hair to show my talent”, to “how can I use the gift God gave me, to bring Him glory and honour?”
These days, I still look at being a hairstylist as a chance to use my God-given talent for the opportunity to make God’s children look and feel good. Sometimes all it takes is a hairstyle, and sometimes it might be a listening ear, or an opportunity to share the Gospel with a client who desires to hear it. Either way, the door for such conversations and interactions was opened through artistic expression, and Im grateful and delighted to be used by God in such a way that pays my bills in the process.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have been a licensed, professional cosmetologist since 2008, but the dream and desire to do hair started as a child! “What sets me apart from others” is actually a question I have had a lot of time to reflect on as of lately, prior to this interview. Yes, we know there are millions of hairstylists in Atlanta alone, but I can honestly say that in my 16th year as a licensed stylist, the thing that has began to separate me from my colleagues is that I stopped doing hair for my personal gain. I began to ask God in prayer to use me any way He see fit, and I dedicated my gift to Him!! He gave it to me anyway, so what better way to express my gratitude than to give it back to Him? When I stopped looking at me being a hairstylist as just me “doing hair”, but as more of a ministry (because it is), everything changed for me. And I mean that in the best way possible. In my younger days, my clients used to come to me and “spill the tea”, and now, they still come to vent and get Godly advice about their problems, but the same stylist they used to gossip with, they now ask to pray with them?!?! That’s something only God could have done. And typically this would be something I wouldn’t share, but just in case there is a Holy Spirit filled hairstylist reading this, I want to say: “Your ministry is also in your gift!”
Being a hairstylist has been both hard and easy. I have found that the easiest way to overcome these challenges is to remain teachable. Don’t be afraid to ask for help in whatever it is you’re doing. Whether its from God (highly recommend), a coworker, YouTube, whatever! We don’t know everything! This is probably one of the biggest lessons I have learned over time, in this industry.
Having the right attitude, and the right mindset before starting a project can be a launching pad for you! For example, I remember once, I took a job as department head of a movie being filmed out of town, and all hell broke loose. Production was all over the place, people were quitting left and right, but just staying calm and not acting out of impulse lead me to stay, and that literally was the event that allowed me to be grandfathered in the Local 798 Union!!
If I could let the world know anything about my brand, it would be that (if you haven’t already guessed,) I am a tool to be used by The Most High God, and my gifting belongs to Him. I want to treat His sons and daughters (my clients) like the royalty that they are (sons and daughters of The King), and make them look and feel good, while reminding them of their purpose and inspiring them any way possible. That’s what you can expect from my brand as a whole.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Hmmmm… Since Im in school now, we would probably have limited time, but every day you have to eat, right? I would plan the week based around what live music venues are having shows, and then go from there, because I love live music. Of course we have to visit Hal’s “The Steakhouse” and have the gumbo, duck l’orange, and lobster bites. I don’t drink any more, but I can never go wrong with sweet tea with lemons, or ginger ale. Something like Juicy Crab for Dungeness crab legs and black mussels with light butter, and the sauce on the side.. lol. I love trying mom and pop soul food restaurants, and sometimes I just google what I’m near, just to try something new. Busy Bee is fool proof, in my book. Perfect Note ATL is one of my spots, because they always have good music, and the food is amazingggggg! Last but not least, we would have to most definitely end the trip with church on Sunday @embassycity, because there is no place like it, and its the perfect way to recharge for the week ahead.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to first give honour to my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, for opening the door and the chance to let my light shine at any and every presented opportunity
I would also like to dedicate my shoutout to my parents and my sister, my number one support system!! My Pastors (Apostle Bryan and Lady Patrice Meadows) for the consistent pour, and helping to push me into my destiny! My mentor, and friend Derek J, for being one of the biggest blessings I’ve come across in the hair industry! And last but certainly not least, another one of my mentors, Nickey Martin for believing in me, and always trying to put me on. lol.
To say I love you all, would be an understatement. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!
