We had the good fortune of connecting with Nicholas OSE and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nicholas, what do you attribute your success to?
I think the most important factor behind mine, and anyone’s success, particularly in the music industry, is the resolve and determination to keep pushing forward and never give up. When doing something creative that is judged highly subjectively, it’s common to get put down and be told no frequently. Over the years, I’ve learned to take negative feedback and turn it into something positive by using it to grow and be better in the future. With every song I produce or every time I perform, I strive to top my previous best. With this mindset, I’m always striving for, and subsequently achieving better than before.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I was first introduced to music in fourth grade when I learned how to play the flute. As I got older, I began taking flute more seriously and continued throughout middle and high school, attending multiple District Honor Bands and GMEA All-State’s. In eight grade, I created my first orchestral composition at the suggestion of my Band teacher at the time. After realizing a passion for creating music, I kept composing for a variety of ensembles large and small, most notably for the Georgia Tech Concert Orchestra, Spring Semester 2022. My freshman year of college, I began experimenting with a Digital Audio Workspace. I taught myself how to use Logic Pro X and began creating beats for fun. Over time, I studied pop and hip-hop hits to gain insight into how to write music for a genre and style so much different than orchestral. For my first song “Purgatory”, I worked with a professional audio engineer, during which I learned about vocal mixing and the studio recording process. Back in this early stage, it was difficult to stay motivated because nobody really took me seriously. I had to keep my head down and stay on my grind, keeping in mind the goal of improving with every project. Fast-forward two years and I now have a full album, EP and multiple high quality singles released that I am proud to show other people. I still have a long way to go if I want to make a career out of this, but I acknowledge the progress I’ve made thus far; it serves as a constant reminder that I can do it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my friend from out of town came into the ATL for a week, I’d start by giving them a tour of Georgia Tech’s beautiful campus. The tour would begin in my Fraternity House of Delta Chi and would progress through Tech Green, West Campus hammocks, Tech square, and would probably end in Atwood’s Pizza just up the road. From there, we’d walk down Spring St. and pick up some Insomnia cookies fresh out of the oven. Maybe to wrap up the night, we’d go to one of the clubs nearby to see one of my artist friends who’s performing that night.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d love to shout out one of my artist friends who has been on his grind recently, but has always had time to show up and support me regardless of what’s going on in his life. JahWill Fannings is a third year at Georgia Tech who specializes in music production and is the owner of Jah Studios. JahWill has mixed many of my songs and I always love working with him because he takes everything he does seriously. Like me, he’s not satisfied with his product unless it’s at 100%. When we collaborate on a song, he’ll give me criticism, feedback and useful suggestions in order to help me achieve the highest quality product. Unlike most people, he’s not afraid to give me the honest, brutal truth either. JahWill is the type of person to straight up tell me “nah, sing that part again.” That’s how you know he cares about what we do. Just from working with him, I’ve learned so much about music production and recording, as well as event planning and social media marketing. Without JahWill, I wouldn’t be where I am with music today.
