We had the good fortune of connecting with Nia Anderson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nia, let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
My legacy is in my name, “purpose”. Nia means purpose and I want to be remembered for loving God and loving people enough to remind them of the gifts and greatness inside of them that have been hidden, suppressed, or forgotten for whatever reason. Every gift, personality, style, talent was given intentionally by the Creator and far too many are ashamed, afraid, or too uncertain to be themselves for a purpose. My legacy is that I gave people the boldness to be unapologetic and unashamed to be and live as God so fearlessly and wonderfully desires.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I trusted God. All that “Be You for a Purpose” is now started as a blogsite when Facebook no longer did it for me. I had a lot to say and needed a way to release.

As I built my blog, God gave and ultimately enlarged my vision for what BYFP would become. I have learned to take baby steps and stay consistent and not to move until God says so. I’ve learned that people need my message and want to hear my message. I’ve learned that my purpose will never change, but how I execute it in my business/ministry will and so I have to be okay and welcome change, w/o fear.

BYFP is still a work in progress and I am loving the development and components of it. I am a different person since 2012 and so I am happy that my brand reflects that and I am proud of myself for how far I have come.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I just moved to DC actually so I don’t know all the best places, but I would take them to the outdoor skating rink in Anacostia, the Zoo, U St for some food, the Pentagon City Mall, then the new roof top restaurant for food and drinks under the stars and live music.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My warrior friends who have reciprocated what I had longed for. You have supported and encouraged me in ways I can only try to express as long as I live. I am forever grateful to God for giving them to me and may I love and steward our friendship in a way that honors Him always.
