We had the good fortune of connecting with Ness Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ness, what makes you happy? Why?
Simple things make me happy like good food and music. I like spending time with people who enjoy and uplift one another. Since the pandemic, I’ve uprooted from NYC to Atlanta in pursuit of new horizons, new business opportunities, and eventually, a house. The pursuit of these new experiences is exciting, but it has also been challenging. No pain, no gain.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets me apart from other DJs is the mixes that I record. I create mixes based on themes, stories, or a certain perspective. These mixes are like short stories. When I was younger, I wanted to be a writer, but when that didn’t occur as I had envisioned, I began creating mixes to tell these stories, via a different platform. Some of my past mixes/stories were about:

The first Black Prez and MLK
The N-Word
Party Music 4 Mom & Dad
MJ Tribute + Prince Tribute
The Sound of Whiskey
Sex Tape
If I Were a Girl
Getting in Shape

Another quality that sets me apart from others is my song selections. I enjoy spinning songs to elicit a reaction from the listener. I love seeing people dancing, singing, and vibing together. I love when I drop something funky and folks react with an emphatic “ooooh” or when they start pointing toward me in recognition of the song. I am not the type of DJ who’s solely going to play chart-topping music, like so many others do. I’m a bit more eclectic.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When my friends visit here in ATL, Ponce City Market, the Aquarium, Sporting Event, Brunch hotspot, Dinner spot, Adult Ent, Lounge with hookah (even though I don’t like hookah)

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Gloria Thomas has helped me navigate through the maze of life. She was my mentor and an employer when I attended City College in NYC. She advised me about so many things, such as my education, parenting advice, investing, etc. I can’t believe she passed away.
