We had the good fortune of connecting with Nefer Ta and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nefer, what inspires you?
I am inspired by my city (Camden, NJ) where I’m from. When I first started photography and being creative, innovative, I would drive around the city and find abandoned lots, garages, graffiti parks and areas that were deemed to be what people would consider a mess. Areas where people wouldn’t dare go, yet along do a whole photo shoot. Being able to see the beauty and capture it from my camera and my viewpoint inspired me. I am inspired by black culture, black women. Other photographers inspire me. Music inspires me. My children inspire me.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart from others is I am a Photographer, Editor, Creative Director, Thrifter and Stylist for my brand Vintage Dope. A lot of other photographers have a team (which is a great thing). I think what separates me is I’m able to do the work on my own as well as work with a team. I capture my thoughts and feelings on camera without ever having to show who I am. My muses are able to portray my brand and represent it. I am most proud of my photo shoot with Foot Action for their Spring/Summer 2021 Essentials collection. My photos were used for promo on their website and printed out on display at all of their stores in America. Seeing that in person and able to touch photos I actually created for such a big brand was amazing. I always wanted my photos in stores on display because I absolutely love Commercial/Brand photos, so this was an amazing accomplishment for me.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am def a foodie, so I Would recommend a food tour of NYC where we would go to Harlem and eat at Sylvia’s, Amy Ruth’s. I love fast food. I would also stop at Negril in Manhattan. I’m more of a spontaneous person so planning is cool but our events would be determined on our mood for that day.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband, Rashad. He put a camera in my hand in 2012 and it’s been up ever since. He taught me hands on, day to day how to work a camera, h0w to separate myself and create a style, how to capture different angles. He taught me how to start and run my business. He’s responsible for a lot of behind the scenes things that go in with my brand. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be the photographer and business women that I am. From his tough teaching sessions to him supporting me on every shoot that I do, his encouragement and support has helped to guide my entrepreneur journey.
