We had the good fortune of connecting with Nate Dyer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nate, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk for me has been what keeps me from being stagnant. Everything in life has risks, down to starting your car, or pumping gas, or getting mail at night time. In my life and career path, risk is everywhere without a lot of structure of how to get to where you want to go. In the entertainment industry where I currently work, there is no manual on how to get a foot in the door, how to do business, what to look out for in contracts, agreements, certain jargon, and most importantly ownership. A lot of people that came before me figured things out through trial and error, which takes great risk. Sales is also a part of my business, there’s great risk because your bottom line depends on how good you are at convincing the consumer to come and do business with you. In my life, i’ve been on my own my entire adult life. I left home at 18, changed cities at 22, and started a business at 25. All self funded, and I started my business after being fired from my very secure and stable job. I learned even before that moment that all the security in the world still has some risk to it so you might as well go for what you’re passionate in.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art comes in a few ways! The podcast is my true baby, it was my lighthouse after I saw radio wouldn’t be around as big of a force as it once was and that something different was coming. Kickin’ up dust began last February. It’s an account of life through a mid 20 something college grad in a new city, Atlanta of all places where you’re bound to see anything. From that, I got the urge to dedicate a part of my entertainment solely to shining a light on artists that I love because music was my love before talking was. From there, I know my personality is animated enough for TV, I’ve lately been trying my hand at acting and I think we have something here. Finally, the merchandise, the logo is who I feel i am as a person, which is a giraffe (calm, gracious, extremely like-able, un-like anyone else, but will kill a Lion if need be” with gold teeth coming out of your phone. if you think of it like that, a lot of us are Giraffes. I got to this exact position by a lot of trial and error and frankly being broke without many connections and having to get creative. I learned how to do a lot of things on your own to ensure they’re done right, deadlines are important as well as SHOWING UP ON TIME. Lastly, it’s imperative to keep your name and face clean. People won’t forget how you made them feel. It wasn’t easy and I’m very much still on my journey to where i want to be, but the course is rewarding for sure.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
For attractions that aren’t the club, I’d send them to the Coke factory, aquarium, Safari, Ponce Roof, Stone mtn, & the hawaiian chick fil a,

For food- you gotta hit mary macs tea room, food truck friday in triton yards, you gotta get brunch at one of the following. milk and honey, atlanta breakfast club, breakfast at barneys, or fin and feathers. Harolds on edgewood is good. For some amazing seafood you gotta hit esco seafood, baltimore crab and shrimp and pirates boil.

For the club- gold room fridays, odyssey saturdays, opium, mansion, and Oak. and if you’re into that kind of thing, you gotta hit blue flame, some say magic city but i am team blue flame!
