We had the good fortune of connecting with Natasha Winston Clarke and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Natasha, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
Yes, it’s “Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.” It’s a quote from Dr. Suess and I’ve been applying it to my life ever since I came across it. For me, it means to always be yourself and those who are meant to experience you at your full capacity won’t mind; and those who are trying to make you digestible for them don’t matter. I enjoy it because I used to worry in my early college years that my energy was too much because I had people in my circle that made me feel that way. Then when I started removing those people and working more on myself and my craft, I started attracting people who enjoyed my presence, creativity, and energy. Since then, it’s been up and stuck.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a content creator and have been since September 2021. I make content involving fashion, travel, adventure, and lifestyle; but when I first started out, my only niche was fashion. I came on the scene with my Adidas X Ivy Park photoshoot because I loved the brand so much. It was stylish, nice quality, and a great mixture of the streetwear and corporate girly looks I wanted to achieve. Once I finished sharing my Ivy Park project and received supportive feedback, I didn’t want it to just end there, I wanted to explore more. Since my first photoshoot, I’ve ventured into other areas that benefitted my passion for content creating like website designing, travel, beauty, and more. My journey as a content creator has been nothing short of refreshing–especially when I stopped boxing myself in. I used to worry that if I didn’t niche down, I would lose my engagement. I was more concerned with my numbers instead of focusing on my enjoyment for creating. In a way, it stunted my growth, so I redirected myself from being in front of the camera to working behind the scenes on my craft. Besides the numbers issue, I truly wouldn’t be the creator I am today without taking chances and putting my mental health first. The end of 2021 after my photoshoot, I walked out on a job with a toxic environment. It set me back in my personal life, but gave my mentals a chance to breathe and hone in on my passion for content creating. Now, I ensure I remove myself expeditiously from spaces that threaten my mental health and so far, the results have proven favorable. Overall, my creative path has been successful due to trusting myself and inviting change when wanted or needed.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting me in NYC, I would definitely tell them to bring comfortable walking shoes because that’s all we’re gonna be doing. Before they land, I would create a list of things a week prior so we could have an idea of how much money we’ll need based on the activities they pick. Also, I’m big on planning and making reservations early because you never know. The list would include sightseeing from the Edge building or the Summit, interactive museums like the Museum of Ice Cream or the Spy Museum, Amusement parks like Six Flags or Coney Island if they’re visiting during the spring/summer (which I strongly advise if they’re a person who likes to enjoy being outside), and in-betweens like shopping, walking the Brooklyn Bridge or any events/pop ups happening when they come. I’m more of an Action Jackson when planning, we’re here to have a blast. For food, there’s so many options in NYC: BlackTap, Vibes Soul Food, The Woo Woo NYC, Halal Food, restaurants in Little Italy, Caribbean food. I would try my best to tailor the itinerary to what they would be comfortable with doing. NYC has so much to do and I would want my friend to feel like they experienced some if not all of NYC before they go home.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shout out Yasmin Salina and Nicki Dean for all the encouraging words behind the scenes when coming up as a content creator. Especially Yasmin because she helped me get to a point where I could make space to continue with my creative journey. Other people I would like to thank are my service providers for executing all my creative ideas when I come to my appointments. It’s so much fun with them every time and they’re also extremely supportive of my creative endeavors.
