We had the good fortune of connecting with Nashay Lorick and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nashay, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
As a mental health practitioner, I can and have been of service to those in need in various capacities. What drew me to starting my own business was the unlimited capacity for freedom and abundance, and not solely in terms of finances. As a mother, I longed for the freedom of creating my own schedule, which allowed me to spend more time with my family without feeling pressured or having to ask for permission to engage in a role that is my first priority. For me, being a business owner meant being control of my time, space, and energy which I deem as abundant living!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Therapy by Shay Lorick is a boutique therapy practice empowering successful people to thrive beyond toxic relationships, addictions, and mental health disorders. I have coined myself as a Self-Love Revolutionary and my focus is to help my clients awaken to, accept and embody their most authentic self and thereby improve their ability to manage life difficulties. I’m most proud of the fact that I have developed a proven strategy to meet my clients where they are and provide them with a very rare ability to understand their circumstances in a niche that is not well understood. I am pleased to be able to support successful people that are most often expected to have it all together, many of which are experiencing the stigma of accessing mental health or substance abuse treatment or recovery from toxic relationships of all kinds while holding roles in high profile industries i.e. sports, government, entertainment, and other private sector roles. I understand their unique need for privacy and bring confidential, flexible, and supportive care to the comfort of their home or office. I am a social justice minded clinician who takes part in social justice advocacy through education and training initiatives through my consulting firm as well as participating in independent advocacy as needed and by partnering with organizations. As a person of color, it is my privilege to ally with people of all races and ethnicities. I am a staunch supporter of racial and gender equality. I also offer support to those in the LGBTQ community. I provide an eclectic and holistic and free-spirited, boutique approach to treating mental health and substance use disorders through individual, group and couples counseling either virtually but I also offer on location services for those that desire more intensive approaches in their own environment. I furnish a healthy mix of practical wisdom, vibrancy, and authority to enhance the lives of individuals that desire to engage in self-development while healing from trauma and other life difficulties.

Today my business is steadily blooming. The transition has not been easy but DEFINITELY worth it! I have had to overcome many obstacles with my decision to leave nearly a decade of full time employment as a civil servant of the federal government and all the benefits I was afforded with that position. However, the challenges are a huge part of my testament as a newly divorced mother of 4. My story is proof that women can do anything, overcome any obstacle! So it is my life work to help others to leap over obstacles as a witness to all the possibilities life has to offer. I want the world to know that I am the RESOURCE! That by choosing my services, you are gaining all the wisdom, resilience, self determination, high vibrational energy, and experience that embodies me!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am new to Houston so I am still trying to figure out my favorites. I will say right off tops that I enjoy creating a warm and comfortable environment in my home for hosting my tribe! I would also make reservation to the famous Turkey Leg Hut – no use in spending all of our time standing in line per usual! We would definitely catch a few brunch places on Sunday while listening to some 90’s -2000’s RnB music and drinking mimosas! The beaches in and near Galveston are a must in addition to hanging out at the Kemah Boardwalk with all it’s attractions including ferris wheel and boat ride! We have got to eat crab legs SOMEWHERE (too many spots to name) and go to Erma Rose Winery for a laid back summer night! Perfection! The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Huge props to my granny and my mama (who has transitioned) who raised me to understand that I could be, do, and have anything I want in life! They groomed me into believing in my ability to take risks and succeed at everything I set my mind to do! I’d also like to shoutout my amazing children who reinforce this idea and keep me on the cutting edge! I watch in amazement as their young minds and spirits already surpass the wisdom that I had at that age. They are my greatest inspiration. Finally, I have an amazing tribe of special friends that I truly consider family. These folks believe in me and their encouragement and grind keep me motivated on a daily basis!!! I love these crazy people!
