We had the good fortune of connecting with Nara Hamm and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nara, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I went to college, and in my Junior year I was getting into self care more. I got a mental illness diagnosis & I was having a lot of trouble getting through it. I couldn’t find products for the issues I had with my skin so I started to research and got into making my own. long story short my friends wanted some, then their friends, and boom. it exploded. I spent that summer creating my site, logo, taking photos, ordering labels and getting all my paperwork in order. I was very successful and being social made it much easier to network & find customers.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I own and operate Ka’ili Skincare LLC by myself. I run the site, day-to-day, create all products, order supplies, create content, interact with customers and run all social media. I’m most proud of my connection with my customers, lots of my customers have become friends and always support me when I drop new items. My ability to be social and honest has helped me get so far in my field. Word of mouth is the fastest way that i’ve been able to flourish. Things have been tough however, i’ve experienced a million setbacks attributed to my personal life, finances and school. I always remind myself how much I put into my business and how far i’ve come and I can’t just stop and leave people ashy! haha I have learned so much throughout my business journey. The biggest lesson is that we should always be kind to people. I have a degree in Mass Communication, Public Relations. I can write a great email and communicate so effectively, and it’s gotten me so far. People that email me positively always get more than they needed, People that don’t, are respected but don’t get more. I always email my vendors and shipping providers with respect and patience, and never have a bad experience. I want the world to know that everyone deserves access to healthy skincare options. Affordable and honest skincare is my main goal.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in Atlanta and I love to eat. I would take my bestfriend to one of my favorite brunch spots, Thumbs Up or First Watch. Then a walk in Centennial Olympic Park or Piedmont Park. Then a nice lunch at Cafe Intermezzo or Walburgers. A nice chill place like Botanical Garden or a VR Bar like Revery on Boulevard. Dinner and drinks at El Super Pan at The Battery and dancing at Live at the Battery.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have to give credit to my boss friend Alexis Thompkins. We both met working on campus and talked about our business plans. I got her into making products and we’ve been business besties every since. She’s always encouraging me, sending me helpful videos and telling people about my business. I can text her 3 AM asking if my promo flyer looks ugly and she’ll be so honest. We relate so much with the work/relationship/business balance and always help each other not expecting anything in return. She truly keeps me from spinning out of control.
