We had the good fortune of connecting with N’ova J and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi N’ova J, what’s the most difficult decision you’ve ever had to make?
To be 200% genuinely and authentically myself! It’s hard to stop caring what other people think about you, especially your family and friends. Once I gave myself the grace to flow in my own identity, I stopped being so hard on myself for not measuring up to standards others have set for me, and I started following my highest joy. 🙂

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve been singing my whole life. Growing up, both of my parents were pastors so I sang in church since I could talk all the way through college. Although I’ve been writing since a young age, I didn’t start releasing my own music until this year 2022! This process has been a beautiful challenge. Before, I struggled internally whether to release Gospel or R&B music. I wanted to authentically highlight myself and where I’m at on my journey and also highlight who God is and spread the gospel. When I stopped focusing on the end product and allowed myself create, I found I was able to be both because the two were never separate..

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
okayyyyy me and my girls love a good lounge! so we’d probably go to Edgewood where there’s a little bit of everything. My friend group is just as eclectic as I am, so depending on who it is we can walk the beltline, do a picnic in the park, go to a jazz club, go dancing, get bottomless mimosas at brunch and ALWAYS go to an open mic 🙂 I like to try different places all the time, so maybe there’d be some new spots we’d try together. I’m a spontaneous planner… if that’s a thing. I can say lets plan for an outdoor activity Saturday and we could be sippin wine at a vineyard or jumping out a plane whatever the vibes are that day. In a week, I’m sure we’d visit the spa, cirque bar and grill, H mart, CRU, the museum, big easy snoballs, and brunch our way through the rest.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My parents and friends who are my support system. I thank them for encouraging and inspiring me in their own crazy ways! <3 Also, the book “The Game of Life and How to Play it” This book taught me that Life isn’t a mystery to be solved, but a game to be played, enjoyed and ultimately win!
