We had the good fortune of connecting with Mysta Ry and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mysta, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I love this question. I love it because you actually get a moment to reflect on personal balance. I believe that, growing up I’ve watched many people project. We pour, and pour until we are exhausted. But then, you run into an unfamiliar element of life called peace. It makes you feel weird at first, because it catches you in a vulnerable stand point. Teaching yourself how to let your guard down with no pressure. Accepting this lifestyle from nature, and not by societal trend. By that, I mean give yourself permission to have that for you and not just for the people that’s looking in. It’s cliche to say, but iIdolize Beyonce for her natural layer of balance, that she projects so well. I then evaluate my career, and my personal life. Knowing that the two meet in the middle, but I ask myself, “is there balance?”. Without copying any methods, and only coping with what I never allowed myself to answer out loud…I felt it. It was a silent, radiant, and mesmerizing moment that happened within me. I use to always look back and punish the past me within the span of 7 years, when really I should be thanking him for leading me to pure balance. Drink more water kids, take your vitamins, and explore through your beautiful truth. God made you, for you to make you, make it. As long as we have balance. We shall flourish. Quote that please.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My name being Mysta Ry (mista REE) does all the explaining for me, I’d like to think. I really just create based off of what I feel, and how it can creatively translate for my viewers. Don’t get me wrong, I critic myself to the T. It has it’s unhealthy days, but it makes my vision stronger. it took for me to return home, to see that my voice is my emotional support line. It’s like I’m able to call myself, and seek understanding just from what I sing about. I’m a creative that reflects, in search of meaning. It took me a while to realize it, but I knew I had to open my eyes to see that it’s much more than topping these charts. Just last year, around this time, I auditioned for Laurieann Gibson. There were other greats in the room as well. I made it to the 3rd round of this day, in complete unidentified confidence. Long story short, I got a no from Gibson. It was the best moment in my life, because it was a ”good no”. She reassured me based on her decision, letting me know that I was meant to be a solo artist, in comparison with her time with Lady GaGa. Best moment hands down. She changed my perspective. When I perform, it’s a hybrid expression of authentically who I am, and my roots. Making sure my voice hugs others, the way it hugs me. I wonder if others feel the same. Within my time of creating my upcoming project, I’ve allowed it to be great by allowing myself to see, while being vulnerable. I call this project ‘R&B Therapy’, in hopes that it actually becomes a playlist for the world to click on. This project is in modern form of radio music, with a fusion of jazz, and a saturday night wet ride in the whip. I took all of these key points and juiced it into a cup I call, ‘Me’. I’m also a dancer, so I’m bringing back some familiar sound to some of my tracks for my peers to enjoy. Seriously, it’s amazing.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Hmm. Hanging with me is a bundle of goofing off! To be very honest. An itinerary that would be ideal for my guest would be going down to Krog Street Market and get get some ice cream. Yum. Then, we would go get shots at a nearby bar. I only like smooth or fruity drinks, so hopefully they like my choice! After we would go grab some barbecue from Big Daddy’s off on Memorial. Finally, we would go to a drive-in movie theater to see a thriller. Albanese gummies me please.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Of course! Here we go with the family reunion shoutout. Ha! All jokes aside, I’d really like to thank Caesha London World of Fashion Brand, Lalanada Scented Candles, and De’Passion Natural Hair & Skin Care. These three beautiful women are my Mom, Grandmother, and Aunt! All based in Detroit, MI. That’s where I’m from. I’d also like to thank Darrien Pope, my amazing friend and a DOPE videographer/photographer. I love all of these beautiful people.
