We had the good fortune of connecting with Mychala Ward and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mychala, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
How I know that I should keep going is when it’s all I think about; when it’s all I see and all around me, I think of those as signs from God guiding me. And I don’t really believe in giving up. I think of it more as redirection. Sometimes, there are things, people and places that no longer serve us, and you’ll know that uncomfortable feeling when it comes up. We outgrow a lot of things in our lives, it doesn’t necessarily mean we gave up, it just means we’re going in a different direction.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business is called FITherapy Co. I help professional and former dancers stay fit by prioritizing their wellness goals while making fitness fun. I enlighten women of color on how to get in shape while overcoming anxiety & depression by making fitness fun. At the time, I was dealing with depression, I was 2 years in my fitness lifestyle, I was working on becoming a certified trainer and I was at a job that I hated. After their passing, I channelled all my energy into the gym and let all my emotions out during the workout. It was my therapy. I wanted to share how fitness has saved my life and how it could do the same for others. This journey has not been easy at all. I’ve questioned myself a lot, I’ve been in toxic environments as well has having the wrong people around me and sometimes I let fear get the best of me, but it’s up to me to fight through it and keep going. I’ve learned to take things one task, one day, and one step at a time. Small progress is better than no progress because it’s easy to get overwhelmed with all of your thoughts and ideas.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my friend was visiting Atlanta, Ga, I would definitely take them Jeju Spa in Gwinnett to relax from a long day of traveling. It’s 24 hours so we could go at any time. We would them spend time with my family, such as my parents and siblings. I would then take them to Ponce City Market with some of my friends and family. We could definitely have lunch and enjoy the rooftop. We could also walk the Atlanta Beltline while we’re at it. I would also take them to Piedmont Park to relax and enjoy some time outside in the sun. There are also plenty of places to eat over there, but I would choose to go to the Nook for lunch. Then I would show them a day of my life. I would definitely encourage them to come to one of my morning classes as an Orangetheory Coach, which is always a good idea to start your day with a workout. I would them show them how I work on why business after. They would come to the gym I train at which is BeHealthConscious Gym and let them meet some dope fitness trainers. I’ll also encourage them to come to one of my favorite fitness classes in Atlanta called Bound with the Pound. It’s a dope trampoline class instructed by DPAC ATL at FDL Compound near East Point, Atlanta. There are more places, but those are definitely the main people, places and things we would see.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate this shoutout to my grandparents. Now that all of you are no longer with us, I owe it to you guys for helping me become the person that I am today. I also want to dedicate this shoutout to Eshe, my dance mentor, for mentoring me since I was a little girl and even now. I want to shoutout my gym family at BeHealthConscious Sports & Fitness Complex, ever since I’ve joined this gym, you all became family. Thank you for all you do for me. And last but not least, I want to dedicate this shoutout to my parents and my siblings, I love you guys forever!
