We had the good fortune of connecting with Myah Lipscomb and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Myah, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
My faith is a major part of who I am and is what keeps me grounded in all I do. There are very specific dreams and aspirations that God has given me the vision for and strength to carry through. Giving up simply is not an option because I know that I was placed on Earth for a specific purpose to fulfill and want to be obedient to my God given assignment.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

I am an award winning filmmaker who loves every aspect of television and film production. This passion stems from my desire to create positive representations of people of color, especially women of color, in television and film. Everything about the creative process of television and film production excites me! From the writing and development of a story to constructing the final product in the edit, the process of bringing an idea to life is fulfilling. It is so hard to put what I do in a box or in one category. I love directing, editing, cinematography, producing, writing, as well as acting.

My professional journey as a filmmaker began while I was in film school. It was there that I was able to produce a proof of concept for my television series, #WeirdMYAH, that I also star in. This series follows my character, Myah Bridges, an HBCU student, as she navigates how the world sees her and how she sees herself…just plain weird. This project has been a labor of love and I am inspired by how far it has come over the last seven years. I am currently in the pitch process to television networks and production companies with the goal of #WeirdMYAH becoming a full length, mainstream television series. Building anything from the ground up takes a great deal of patience and persistence, but despite any obstacle I have faced, my faith has kept me encouraged to continue pushing forward.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would definitely try to give my friend the most well-rounded experience. Despite having lived in Nashville for twelve years, there is still so much I haven’t done. I would love for my friend to experience a worship service at my church, Mt. Zion Baptist Church, and hear Bishop Joseph W. Walker, III preach. Nashville has some amazing restaurants, so we really can’t go wrong there. It would be fun to check out the new African American Music Museum one day and also get a taste of Nashville’s nightlife downtown on Broadway. I absolutely love the new Fifth & Broadway area and feel it is becoming a Nashville hot spot.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to give a major shoutout to my parents, Sylvester and Chandra Lipscomb. They have consistently offered unconditional love and support throughout my life that has truly shaped me into the woman I am today. From my changing careers, to the pursuit of developing my television series, #WeirdMYAH, they have been by my side every step of the way. I received my undergraduate degree in Animal Science/Pre-Veterinary Medicine from Tennessee State University in Nashville, Tennessee and appreciate all that I gained from my experience attending an HBCU. I also am grateful for the support I received from my alma mater Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee where I received my Master of Fine Arts degree in Film and Creative Media. My professors and cohort were very instrumental in the early success of #WeirdMYAH. I was able to film my entire proof of concept for the show on Lipscomb University’s campus and appreciate the generosity and encouragement I was shown. There are countless family members and friends who have poured into me over the years that I would also like to dedicate this shoutout to. It is such a blessing to be surrounded by individuals who genuinely want to see me succeed.
