We had the good fortune of connecting with Mya Abdullah and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mya, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
When I began taking my career seriously I was taking online classes at Clark Atlanta University. It gave me more leverage to travel and do big production jobs. Then I had to go back on campus and truly figure out how to balance school and work. At first it wasn’t easy because I was more focused on working. But my school is responsible for a lot of the connections I’ve made so far. As time went on I had to really begin to pace and time myself. From shoots to homework assignments. I had created and stuck to a daily schedule. Learning how to balance both has helped me grow in career. It helped me learn how to properly prioritize.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve always had the passion to tell a story and entertain people. Ever since I was a kid I also tried to create some kind of project. I got my camera in high school and always had the mind set that I was a brand. Once I officially took things seriously, I would reach out to artists and business everyday on instagram. Waiting for someone to give me a chance to show my talent. I didn’t truly find my niche until last year. My use of color/lighting in dark settings. Learning how to effectively network was the best lesson I’ve learned so far. Now I can effectively communicate and connect with artists when I have content of them.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My current go to spot is the Vortex, I absolutely love their burgers. I would also follow it up by having photoshoot at Little 5 Points or The Krog Street Tunnel. Throw in mani/pedi and some bowling at Atlantic station.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a shout-out to my mom, for always pushing me to chase my dreams. No matter how discouraged and disappointed I may get, she’s always there to lift my head up.
