We had the good fortune of connecting with MR B ROCKSTAR and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi MR B ROCKSTAR, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
First of all, Spoken Word is, in fact, an INDUSTRY. It is often related to the industry of Poetry. These two are adjacent in community aspects but they have fundamental differences. The reason people do not know Spoken Word is an industry is because the stakeholders, gatekeepers, and highly successful participants of it have not done a sufficient job at expanding the potential of Spoken Word. It is a tertiary industry meaning it involves highly skilled professionals and the wide array of services they provide for people. However, without a trusted accreditation system in place to properly license and categorize its members we are left to think it’s just a hobby that “might” make you a couple dollars. That being said, the Spoken Word industry should not be lumped into the Entertainment/Music industry either because all Spoken Word is not always meant to entertain. It can be used to heal, to motivate, to educate and explain with no entertaining intention. Whether the consumer found the service entertaining is another story. After all, Spoken Word is the oldest form of live presentation from which all live entertainment is birthed.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Sure; as a Spoken Word CEO it’s been a wild ride. My business, B ROCK&CO, consists of 3 pillars: education, entertainment, and events. Briefly, education comes in the form of artist development with performance-based workshops and stage confidence training. We are expanding that to help artists bring their brands to life with resources and knowledge. This is my pride and joy right now because it developed in an organic way and has had the biggest impact although it’s the youngest pillar of my business. Entertainment consists of “all the fun stuff”features, traveling, concerts, tours, interviews like this, content, merchandise etc.
And EVENTS act as the hub for all of this in a number of ways. We are currently curating a quarterly, monthly, and weekly event year round. I’ve been curating shows almost as long as I’ve been performing in them.
Currently, I collaborate and contract with about 40 people and entities every year on these projects and endeavors.

It was not easy getting to this point of polished precision in my business. Actually it was the most challenging thing I’ve done in my life so far. I left my corporate job thinking motivation alone would take me to the promised land. Furthest thing from the reality. I’m the entrepreneur who jumped out the plane with no warning and learned how to make a parachute on the way down. That pressure and uncomfortable circumstance forced me to learn and learn quick! As I mentioned, I had mentors that pointed me to books, figures, and information. I am a lifetime student in my field of business and still learning daily.
I used to pressure people into leaving their jobs and chasing their dreams too but I regret it now. It’s simply not for everyone. Don’t get me wrong, there are A LOT of entrepreneurial qualities such as thinking critically and independently, pivoting, problem solving and many other traits that can elevate everyday people, but the complete entrepreneur is built different. That’s one thing people know about me next to my poetic contemporaries…I’m built different. There isn’t a single poet/spoken wordist like me and there will be hundreds, maybe thousands who will model after me when I’m gone. I am what they call “HIM.”

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Here in ATL there’s something happening every day and night. The land of day parties (haha). As an introvert, we might hit 1 day party just to check it off the list. As artists, I’m definitely a guy to know for events around the city because I’m plugged into and support 95% of the poetry/spoken word scene out here. So whoever is popping that night is where we will most likely be, if it ain’t my spot anyway. Let’s see, I probably let my shorty take us skating at Cascades for a classic ATL experience. Probably take them to Westmoor Drive to visit the legends like GeorgiaMe, Abyss & Red Storm. That’s an event by itself. Of course it wouldn’t be an ATL experience if we don’t wait in Slutty Vegan long a** line (more hahas). We gotta go to Tassili’s as well and get a kale wrap. If we feeling nature-inspired then we going northwest to a cool waterfall vibe. Man, I don’t know because to be honest, there are so many things I want to do and haven’t yet because I’m locked into my mission right now. That question is actually inspiring me to get out more.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First group that comes to mind, a “secret” poetry society I am apart of called V..I.P. or Village Inspired Poets. The support of these 8 individuals is unlike anything I’ve been apart of. The wisdom, knowledge, and experience of this group is priceless. There is about a 25 year age gap so we get a healthy mix of perspectives and energy. It’s a privilege to shine with these awesome poets & speakers.

I always have to shout-out my big bro Fingers, the first poetic leader I encountered and motivated my journey. In addition, I wouldn’t be here without many mentors on all levels. From events, non-profits, performance, relationships, and business, my journey with them saved me so much time in finding success.
