Meet Moxie MVMT | Vocalist & Interdisciplinary Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Moxie MVMT and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Moxie, why did you pursue a creative career?
Art feels second nature, like breathing for me.
Allowing me to express my inner self, tell stories through creation, and be vulnerable, art feels necessary to my very being. It gives me courage, it forces me to be introspective, and it helps me share my experiences in a way that makes me feel fulfilled, seen, and brave.
Even when the world around me feels out of control, my art allows me to have the audacity to take back my control, while continuing to help me possess and embody moxie as a movement.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’d like to say my art is inspired by everyone around me. The experiences I’ve observed, been witnessed to, and lived in real time, allow me to keep a curious spirit. I like to call those that are compelled by my art muses and in doing so, it reminds me that art is like water: fluid, responsive, and ever-changing.
First being exposed to music through church and competitive choir, I grew up surrounded by muses. With mother, aunt, & both grandmothers singing and exposing me to the beauty of expression through music, I sit on the shoulders of their courageous journies. I am who I am today because of the strong foundation of my parents, encouraging and igniting my spark for pursuing and taking art seriously, while exposing me to various music genres throughout my childhood. Raised with a mindset that nothing worth it in life is easy, I would say I’ve come to value more and more the challenge and character building that disappointment and at times rejection creates. I believe the biggest lesson learned is seeing the beauty in the journey and in that journey the tests I’ve experienced have provoked my art, deeper internal conversations about my why, and forced me to put first something what I hold so dear, self-love and self-expression through: poetry, music, dance, and visual artistic sharing. I wouldn’t be here today more persistent and ignited to share my story and the stories that breathe life into Moxie, if it weren’t for the hard lessons I’ve learned along the way, and in a sense I am even more grateful for those lessons, because it has forced me to fight for my voice and my truth. That is what I want to share with the world and that is what I continue to strive to access for myself & my moxie, which is the audacity to be completely oneself even when storms hit, while uses those storms to catalyze creative conversation and growth within myself. This spark, although at times overwhelming has helped me feel seen, valued, and heard through my art & that is my ultimate desire with my moxie movement, to share with whoever wants to listen and is curious & courageous enough to explore with me.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Although I am still learning about the beautiful city of Atlanta and all the cool spots, I would say some of my favorites are shows at Apache, vibes at Peter Street Station, and walks in Piedmont Park. I have come to appreciate the eclectic, hometown energy of Atlanta and am excited to grow more in and with the city I love so much.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I value the women that have poured into me and a specific person that has seen me, validated my voice, & encouraged my evolution has been my professor Dr. Tarshia Stanley. I took her class “Images of Women in the Media” when I attended Spelman College and our connection has continued to grow throughout the years since graduating.
She has taught me how patience, study, empathy, curiosity, and conviction are learned skills through both good and challenging experiences and has guided my point of view by feeding words of honeycomb and discernment into my spirit. I am grateful for her mentorship and am in deep gratitude for her brilliance. She truly encompasses what it means to have moxie and I hope to use my art to inspire those that are like-minded.
I feel blessed to know such a beautiful soul and aspire to have the courage to be a change-maker like her for the greater good of others.
