We had the good fortune of connecting with Morgan Tyler and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Morgan, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
Truthfully, I don’t know if there’s ever a right time to give up on something that you genuinely want and dream about. Not if it’s your passion and it runs through your blood. There’s a common saying that goes around nowadays saying “It’s not on you it’s in you.” I think that reins true on everything but especially with goals and creative ventures. I think we as a society tend to forget that it’s okay to fail. Often times, you can argue it’s good to fail before you succeed, so that you can learn from your previous mistakes. I don’t think it does anyone justice to win on the first try and keep on winning and winning after that. How are you going to know how to adapt to your situation, or weather storms when you haven’t been given the luxury to see something not work out? That’s why I’m big on the word pivot. Never give up, and trust the process. Some things aren’t going to come easy, and other opportunities may work for you that doesn’t work for others. So I don’t think it hinders you at all to switch gears and try another route to the end goal. There’s always more than one way to skin a cat.

We as people also don’t know how much time we have so I feel like we owe it to ourselves to put as much effort into the things we love as possible. Time is the one currency that we don’t know how much we can spend and I think the more time you put into anything, the more knowledgeable and experienced you become as far as what to do and what not to.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I genuinely think what beat sets me apart from contemporaries and other people doing music right now is my versatility. You can hear it in the music that I’m adaptable and I don’t exactly have one lane I’m limited to. I’ve been told it can be a blessing and a curse, but I don’t view it that way. I feel that’s the point. It’s more of an amalgamation of rap and pop, with elements of rock and other genres sprinkled in between. The subject matter may be similar, and overall I’m telling a story. But I never want the listener to get bored. I wanna be able to come with something fresh every time they come to hear new Morgan Tyler.

Overall I’m most excited about my upcoming album ‘Without Rain, How Do We Grow?’. It’s a passion project I’ve been working on for the past 2 years, trying to perfect the songs and the sounds that I want to convey. While making songs are fun, it’d be diminishing to the time my team and I have been putting into making this a solid body of work to say it came easy. Some songs get thrown to the cutting board, some moves may logistically not work, and we face new obstacles everyday. Isn’t that the life of a creative? I think partially what took so long was also deciding how I want this era to be presented. Whether that be artistically, sonically, or visually I want to show the consumer growth and I want them to be along for the ride that has been the last 2 to 3 years, and that was only going to come with time, trial, and error.

I learned what really drives me and I feel that I’ve gained a better understanding of what people actually like to hear and see from me as well. Sometimes that’s a key part that artists don’t even get to. Of course you always want to make what’s special to you and what you want to hear, but sharing it with the world you have to also be prepared to receive the yays and the nays equally. What is art if it doesn’t make you feel any sort of way? Good or bad it needs to resonate some type of emotion. That’s what I want people to grasp when giving the music a chance. Yes, I want you to move and dance, yes this song could be played in the club, yes you can picture a late night drive listening to this beat, but I want them to know these are real stories. Feel free to connect dots and correlate these songs to you and your situations. Whether it’s my own personal experience or in drawing from someone else’s that I’m familiar with, these lyrics are based on something that the person next to you could be going through as well. The people who live the lifestyle will understand it off the bat, and the ones who don’t will still be able to find something that gravitates to them.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’ve had to live this scenario multiple times already. Upon landing, I feel like we have to start off with something light, but also something that you can’t find outside of Atlanta. We need a staple. we gotta go to a local wings spot, lemon pepper, and honey hot all day. Throughout the week after we got them vetted with the wings I feel like that’s when we can go to more exotic places by the day. Chef Rob‘s has an amazing Caribbean restaurant, there’s tons of barbecue spots, and there’s this really dope hidden gem called Mambo’s, an Italian restaurant in the Windy Hill area.
We wouldn’t slack on the activities either. Coming here I feel like certain things are mandatory to say you came through the A. Lot of my friends are interested in the art museum, so it’s only right we take them to the High. Lot of places they see on TikTok or social media and ask me about a lot. Piedmont Park, the Beltline (which already has its own set of attractions and restaurants that you can’t go wrong at.
When you factor in nightlife, it’s barely gonna be any free time on the itinerary. There’s hella lounges and chill spots that you can get nice drinks at if clubbing isn’t your type of vibe. I tend to go to speakeasies with my friends often. Havana has a really nice club, El Malo rarely disappoints and MJQ is boarderline a regular move. Thats one thing about Atlanta that I love. There’s something to do for every type of vibe, for every occasion, at any point of the day. You can’t get that just anywhere.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d be here forever if I broke down every person that deserves some recognition into helping me keep this ship afloat along the way. First and foremost I would be remissed to now thank my family, namely my parents. I feel like they both have been key factors in the big “Why?” I do anything artistic anyway. It stems down from when I was young and I used to rummage through their old music collections and put myself onto whatever it is they were listening to at the time, all the way to them being mindful of my interests enough to put me in an arts school at a young age. I can’t even begin to tell you how many concerts and artist showcases my mom room the time out her day to support me at. From bars and smaller venues in Toledo, to my very first packed out show opening for artists in LA she’s always been there and I couldn’t thank her enough for being the inspiration and the motivation to keep going.
Aside from family, I have to thank my chosen family as well. Whether it be the friends I’ve made at school, or college, or friends that’s I’ve met networking through life. I don’t only surround myself with creators but everyone around me helps inspire me to some degree. I don’t think I would have even batted and eye at music if it wasn’t for my brother Eddie. He was already heavy into music and encouraged me to seriously pursue it as I did it in highschool, then eventually taught me how to engineer and use protools over the pandemic. I wouldn’t be here without my guys Nick and Gary, we started Xtremley2Happy, a streetwear clothing brand that initially encouraged us to move to Atlanta. I wouldn’t be here without Christian, who up until recently helped me curate countless moves and book shows. I wouldnt still be in Atlanta without my partner Jennasis, who allowed me to stay with her when I was in between places to live, just so I can keep pursuing this. I even I’d need to send some love to my homie Wuuski, whose clothing brand has really been taking heed lately. When we met we instantly clicked and it always seemed like we have similar creative minds that naturally challenges each other to stay on point in our respective fields. Iron sharpens iron.
Lastly I wanna show appreciation to all my mentors and establishments that helped me grow. My highschool Toledo School for the Arts. Growing up I don’t think I was as aware of how well they molded me into being prepared for the life that is “being an artist”, but they sure did. Before I ever started writing any music there was acting. I did a role for this musical that had a lot of rap parts and from then people just assumed I did music. When I caught on to that I started to just go along with it, and it wasn’t long after that I fell in love with the process. In addition to school I had to give a nod to my mentors, Kreative Villains. They’ve probably forgotten more about the music business than they’ve taught me and I still appreciate every piece of game given. Working under them taught me multiple different ways to go about this profession, both and the business professional side. I wouldn’t call it a road map, but things I can’t take with me for years to come to put myself in position…the right way.
I could go on for hours if I broke it down to every single person that I’d like to acknowledge but there will come a time for that. I’ve barely scratched the surface of what I want to accomplish but I needed to sit here and appreciate the ones who have helped me become the artist and man I am today.
