We had the good fortune of connecting with Morgan Rackley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Morgan, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The skincare world can be extremely difficult to navigate for consumers. I would find that I would go to dermatology offices or spas and leave feeling more confused than when I walked in. I knew there had to be a better way of interacting with clients and helping them feel confident and educated in their skincare journey.
Luminous Skin Atlanta was born out of the need for results driven, science backed with a holistic approach skincare in a way that everyone can understand.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Luminous Skin was not always Luminous Skin. We were first The Lash Designory located in Buckhead with a focus on customized, luxury eyelash extensions. From 2011-2019 I owned one of Atlanta’s most successful lash only salons. It was great and I loved it! But by 2019 I was burned out from having multiple employees and seeing 6-8 clients a day. During this time my love for skincare was reignited. So I started taking. more skincare classes and frequenting spas and derm offices for treatments. But I could not find the personalized, results driven care with superb customer service that I was looking for. That was the birth of Luminous Skin. I spent every waking second learning about skin and decided that healing skin was my calling.
I closed The Lash Designory in May 2020 and immediately reopened Luminous Skin Atlanta.
Luminous Skin Atlanta is specifically for the individual that wants results tailored to their needs and lifestyle. We offer a very customized experience. When you come to Luminous we provide a detailed consultation and skin assessment. Followed by designing a treatment plan and home care regimen. We understand that corrective work takes time and a commitment so we do not sell dreams of overnight results. Sorry, that’s not what you will find here. What you will find is safe results driven treatments that are effective for ALL skin types and complexions.
Taking this approach as a business decision was difficult at first. We live in a world of instant gratification and the skincare world is no different. But instant gratification with skin often leads to chemical burns, scars, damaged skin barrier, hyper or hypopigmentation, and acne coming back worse than how it started.
So I stuck to my skincare theory and quickly realized that our clients had already tried the quick overnight style of treatments that did not work and no longer wanted that approach. They wanted the Luminous approach!
Sticking to this grew my business to being fully booked within the first 6 weeks of being open followed by being booked out many months in advance and a waiting list of over 300+ people… during a pandemic.
Some of the best business advice I ever received was to find a problem and develop an undeniable solution. At Luminous Skin Atlanta, thats exactly what we do.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A perfect Saturday in Atlanta for me would be to start at Spiller Parks Coffee Shop in Toco Hill, followed by a walk on the Beltline (near Iman Park). Lunch at Bar Taco and then do a little shopping at Ponce City market.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
A supportive community is the backbone of any service based business. My fellow female entrepreneurs have shown up for me daily. I’d like to thank the many professional Esthetician Facebook groups, like The Solo Esthetician, filled with Estheticians all over the world that willingly give detailed knowledge and advice. If you are a new Esthetician, make use of the free resources like Facebook to connect and build relationships in this industry. I find it’s a very underutilized resource.
