We had the good fortune of connecting with Monroe Baker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Monroe, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
The sole absolute reason I decided to pursue an artistic creative career is because I know all to well how many people don’t have a healthy outlet. I have been through so much from toxic abusive relationships, to cheating, death, and mental health issues. Most things I been through are stigmas that are forbidden to be spoken ok. And being the against grain, beat of my own drum individual I am I broke that chain. I
make sure to express everything I been through no matter how uncomfortable . From all different types of platforms ranging from painting poetry songwriting and singing.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
After giving this much thought, I wanted to make sure I expressed this sincerely on what sets me apart from others. Outside of the cliché saying “Because I’m me” I wanted to explain why it’s because I’m me. I have always been transparent about who I am and what I have been through. Not for the clout or sympathy but because I have experienced first hand how it feels to go through things and feel like nobody relates because it’s not spoken on. I’m always going to give the raw authentic me to my followers. The place I am today as a artist started from singing in my church choir honestly. I loved singing from a young age but in church not only did we sing we was pushed to write new songs each week. It wasn’t always the easiest journey because you are your own toughest critic so I never thought I was as good as those around me but eventually I had to be not only my own critic but also my own fan. Things I have learned and picked up along the way and that everyone isn’t on your team and sometimes you have to go through it alone. Depending on others can be your downfall so I had to push myself to do certain things without the people I wanted to bring to the top with me. If there was one thing I wanted the world to know about me, is that what you see is what you get I am not a product of a music label I am the outcome of the life a black woman went through. And past present or future versions of me will be expressed through my art whether it’s painting poetry books songs or photos. You will always relate to a version of me.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
It’s funny you ask this lol. I am a big foodie and love trying different things but I’m also introverted so I would definitely take her to a place that is comfortable. Atlantic Station was always my first go to but I recently discovered this place called the Works. It’s basically a strip mall of nothing but different restaurants and bars. That’s a great start. I love going to lounges and the BullPen Battle rap battles to hear new upcoming artists and networking with genuine vibes.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The people that come to mind when I think of who has encouraged me and my success is Cree Hefner and Rip Capri. There are other as well but these two stand out because me as a artist was born with the help of Rip Capri and later in my career Cree Hefner was always supportive and put me in positions to be not only seen but heard.
