We had the good fortune of connecting with Monique Overstreet MA, LPC and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Monique, what principle do you value most?
The foundational principles that underpinned the establishment of “Moknowledge LLC” were centered around Knowledge, Truth, and Resilience. I firmly contend that awareness and understanding serve as catalysts for fostering both acceptance and comprehension. A key message I aim to convey globally revolves around the notion of “Reciprocal Acceptance.” Essentially, my goal is to extend acceptance to others in the manner that I would desire for myself. This perspective has evolved from my observations during my upbringing, where I witnessed the profound lengths that individuals, including myself, would go to seek acceptance from others yet failing to “accept”…including ourselves and our own truths. We have a hard time accepting what we cannot comprehend. Also let’s not get it misconstrued, I can accept you for who and where you are while still upholding my boundaries and standards to protect myself. As humans, we are amazingly resilient. When we feel accepted and understood it removes so many barriers. Stand boldly in your truth once you have accepted it for yourself and watch how your life transforms.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am thrilled to have attained my therapist license after a dedicated and rigorous journey. This achievement marks a significant milestone for my professional endeavors, allowing me to broaden my focus beyond the therapy room and delve into various projects I have in store for Moknowledge that have long been on my agenda including more opportunities for public speaking.
Presently, I am in the process of launching Healing Tribe, my therapeutic practice, with aspirations to extend my impact through the establishment of a non-profit organization and a foundation. Additionally, I am eager to explore the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into my business operations.
The path to obtaining my license was not without its challenges. I encountered adversities such as the loss of my father, car accidents, toxic relationships, and personal struggles, including being diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Overcoming these obstacles as an unmedicated adult with ADHD presented its own set of challenges, yet with God and a steadfast village, I persevered.
Throughout my transformative journey, a key lesson that has profoundly impacted me is the power of detachment. Learning to detach from people, ideas, places, and things that do not serve my well-being has facilitated a smoother navigation of life’s complexities. My evolving village, while changing over the years, has remained a constant pillar of strength.
As I anticipate new opportunities and encounters, I embrace the understanding that perfection is not a prerequisite for progress. I encourage others to acknowledge and embrace their unique journeys, recognizing that timelines are subjective. Whether achievements come at 20, 32, 46, 59, 65, or any other age within the narrative of one’s life, the important aspect is the authenticity and individuality of the journey undertaken. Also be intentional with the people around you; It takes a village to be human
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I thoroughly enjoy hosting visits from friends and ensuring they experience the best of what the city has to offer. As an avid hiker and outdoor enthusiast, I would guide them to two remarkable locations: the Beltline and Rosewell Mill waterfall.
The Beltline, with its vibrant atmosphere characterized by captivating art, diverse communities, and delectable food options, is an essential stop. I consider myself a “picky foodie”(LOL), we would explore renowned food halls such as Krog Street Market or Chattahoochee Food Works, and indulge in gastronomic experiences. Noteworthy dining establishments on our agenda include Felinis Pizza, Slutty Vegan, Toast on Lenox, a quality wing spot, Desta Ethiopian Kitchen, Mangos Caribbean Restaurant, Mr. Everything Cafe, and of course a stop at the Dekalb Farmers Market.
Being a fan of live entertainment, concerts, and festivals, I would keep a keen eye on the city’s calendar for any noteworthy events to attend. To inject an element of excitement into our itinerary, I’d plan some fun activities like a day at Andrettis, paintball, a visit to a rage room, a leisurely float down the Hooch, an immersive experience at Sandbox VR, or a thrilling session at Beat the Bomb.
For a more relaxed day, we would unwind by the pool, enjoy a barbecue, and vibe out to some great music. Depending on our inclination, we might explore a few lounges or rooftops to round out the visit with diverse and memorable experiences. Most importantly there will be NAPS! (Lol)
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would not be in existence if it were not for God, all praises to Him first and foremost. From there I have to give honor to my mother and the rest of my village. The tagline for Moknowledge is, “It Takes a Village to be Human,” encapsulating a profound truth that I have personally witnessed and experienced. Build a village that wants to be there as much as you need them there.
