We had the good fortune of connecting with Mona Kabbani and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mona, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I knew I wanted to be a writer. Not only that, but I wanted to be a self-sustaining writer meaning that in the future, I would be able to go full time with my writing career and be well supported by it. But along with my creative mind, I have a business mind and I wanted to run my creative career like a business. I gave my brand a theme and a name that incited interest – Morality in Horror. I write stories and create content that make people feel as though they are a part of something more than just a story – a community. And I’ve enjoyed every well-rounded moment of it. It’s my wonderfully horrific brand of horror fiction! I think it’s important to think of any creative venture as a business, especially if you wish to be fully supported by it one day. It gives you a good birds-eye-view to your work and makes your efforts more efficient. Start off with the passion, the dream, and then strengthen it with a good business backing.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I write horror with a moral twist. I like the dark and creepy but I also want to leave you with a nagging feeling of terror once you put my book down that stays with you beyond the pages. The human condition is a fragile yet powerful thing and I enjoy exposing that in my work with horror and psychological elements that make the visuals of the story itself engrossing but the message haunting. I’ve gone through many mediums to try and give myself some exposure. Patreon, Wattpad, Facebook . . . I discovered the Instagram platform’s Bookstagram side and really grew through there. The medium was perfect for what I wanted to convey and it was easy to engage with others and make valuable network connections. As the platform grows, so does the audience for my work which is awesome because it is continuous. I would say it wasn’t easy but it wasn’t challenging either. I enjoyed the work put into growing my audience which is why I think it’s so important to only put in the marketing efforts you enjoy otherwise you’ll burn out fast. I could engage all day on my platform and never grow tired but I also know that if I tried through another platform, I might not be as excited. Pick and choose what marketing strategy you use carefully – less can be more if it’s something you enjoy. I want the world to know that they can come to my page, read my stories, enjoy the community and have a good time. But to also know that it’s a place for learning and discussing valuable lessons and discoveries about ourselves. I really want people to analyze themselves more often in general and in certain high-stress situations and learn more about what makes them tick. I believe the more you uncover about your psychology, the happier and more at peace you can be.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Definitely my family for accepting that my interests were far from their own yet showing fascination by my work anyway. They’ve been a huge support and great motivators to really kick this career into gear. My highschool teacher, Mr. Sandaal, for reacting to my story with awe and horror, making me want to instill those same emotions upon others. And to every horror movie and book I’ve ever consumed that helped lead me to my own brand of horror. If I hadn’t consumed so much content from such ingenious minds, I wouldn’t be where I am mentally today.
