We had the good fortune of connecting with Moe Carr and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Moe, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My bartending career started in local clubs and bars in Baltimore. I had worked so much that I started to gain regulars. My guests would always ask if I would do private events. After a few of my guest put the idea in my head, I used my weekends to do private parties here and there. I started off charging $80 for 4 hours of service and I still thought that was too high lol. My business has grown into a company that now helps others make money. I never thought 13 years ago when I started this journey I would be where I am today. 5 years ago I legalized my business and started the branding of Moe’s Mixes. Entrepreneurship is hard as hell! There’s a saying, “Don’t nobody wanna race with you, but everyone wants to hold the trophy at the finish line.” I feel that. I have isolated myself so much that all I know is the grind. They say hard work pays off and everyday something new surprises me. I am beyond blessed to have opportunities presented to me and doors open that I would have never imagined.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have honed my skills at several bars, clubs and restaurants over the years. I took that route to gain more experience and knowledge of bartending and management. I have made so many connections and networked with a host of professionals. The journey has not been easy but it’s been well worth it. I have learned that in order to be a successful boss you must first be an employee willing to put in the work. I have met so many people in management positions that have not grasped that concept so naturally I took what I learned during those times to become better. I have a knack for establishing immediate rapport and professionalism that my clients remember for a lifetime.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My bestie actually lived in Atlanta and we both have friends here. We are the type that enjoy low key link ups and house parties. My idea of a bomb night is gin and tonic cocktails and watching re runs of Martin. Because I am part of the nightlife and party scene so often, on my off nights I just want to chill.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have a dream team of support and continuously meeting people that pours into me and my business. My son Is my driving motivation and my reason to keep going. My parents are the GOATs. They assure my son is well taken care of every weekend while I work.
My best friend Keyauna is my everything! She literally keeps me grounded. She was the reason I started my LLC and even covered the cost for some of my business fees.
My little sis LaBreea is constantly sending new ideas my way, making sure I look the part and making sure she keeps me on my toes.
My hair stylist Maurice has been the creative brains behind my most of my branding and has allowed me to bounce ideas off of him; all while slaying my hair.
My chef sister Kierra literally believed in my business and supported me from day 1.
My business partner Natasha has entrusted me with hosting the beverage catering at her venues. As a black woman entrepreneur she has given me some of the best advice to keep moving.
There has been a host of people along the way that has added to my story. All of the bar owners that gave me a chance, all the clients that have trusted me and all the people I haven’t met that constantly refer my business.
