We had the good fortune of connecting with Moca Mula and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Moca, how do you think about risk?
I truly believe there is no reward without risk. I am a risk taker. Taking risks have led me to step out of my comfort zone, find myself on another level, and believe in myself more than I ever have. It has allowed me to prove to myself who I truly am and what I am capable of. Since I was 7 I wanted to be a rapper, but I was definitely scared of the negative that could come with it. Taking that risk and posting a freestyle on my Instagram page was one of the best decisions I ever made. You never know what could happen on the other side of risk taking. It’s important to just “do it”.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My voice, my lyrics, how I ride the beats I choose, my passion for the art, nobody ever knows how I’m coming, and the fact that there’s no cap in my rap all set me apart from others in my field. I got where I am today from being authentic and genuine. It hasn’t always been easy, I criticize my work more than others and sometimes I’m way too hard on myself, which does get me down sometimes. But I have to pick myself up and remember who I am. It takes discipline and self-motivation to overcome that feeling of not being good enough. I push myself, I write daily, and I read to expand my brain and vocabulary. I’ve learned that I just have to keep going. Put it in my music whatever I’m feeling, someone will relate. I have to control my thoughts and emotions, because they’ll tear you down before others will. I want the world to know that it’s okay to be yourself. I pride myself on releasing authentic content and using my past, experiences, and upbringing as a stepping stone. Never be ashamed of what you’ve been through, or where you come from. Nobody is meant to be the same.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take my best friend to the riverfront and sit under the trees. It’s so peaceful and low-key. We would go eat at Paulou’s Bar & Grill, they have really good food & the drinks are amazing. It’s a black-owned family business with great customer service. Then I’d take her to 48, SC and show her where I come from lol. We’ll have a good time sitting on grandma’s porch. We also gone go to the studio. There’s a few studios I would just go to for the vibes, Invasion studios & link with Roxx or Calico for the personal studio vibes.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My friend Dij deserves recognition. She’s always been there literally. From making sure I look good on camera, to being at the studio sessions, to being on the side of the stage when I look over, cheering me on! Her love and support has always been so genuine.
