We had the good fortune of connecting with MIXAURINA and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi MIXAURINA, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I am originally from Rochester, New York. I’ve been living in the Atlanta Metro Area for over a decade now, and while others would say I’m practically an ATLien, I still claim NY heavy. I mean, it is where hip-hop was originated and is one of the fashion capitals in the world (slight flex). My family is also originally from Jamaica, so I am heavily influenced by Caribbean culture. These three areas in particular are known to have underground talent and natural born hustlers. My work ethic and passion for my craft is always recognized and celebrated by others which fuels me to keep going, word to my boy Larry June.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
With any journey, there are going to be moments where you are on fire and other times where you fall off; both times, give yourself grace. I started landing gigs in late 2019 – early 2020, but when the pandemic hit, it completely disrupted my interest to do anything related to DJing. It wasn’t until Fall 2021 where I made the conscious decision to take it seriously again, which inspired an entire rebranding process. I changed my DJ name, got my first logo made, upgraded my equipment, etc. Since then, I’ve had a lot of “firsts.” First fashion show, first baby shower, first restaurant gig, first non-profit event, etc. I’m proud of myself for taking a leap of faith and not allowing outwardly situations keep me in a creative funk. Extremely grateful for the growth!
I always get positive feedback after my gigs on how well I incorporate old and new music. I do this to appeal to the various age groups in the audience as well as showcase the versatility in my music taste.
I started a series called MIXAURINA Mondays, where I upload mixes via Soundcloud every first and last Monday of the month. This is a way I keep myself accountable and remain consistent within my craft.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Hey bestie, welcome to Atlanta where the playas play! First things first, we’re staying at the W for the week. They have an amazing spa and pool. Kicking off the week with dinner at Apt4B, their 3 point pasta has been calling my name since I went for my birthday. Next, is Taco Tuesday at Rreal Tacos for their Birria’s and frozen margaritas! Later that night, we’re at Cru for some hookah and lit vibes. Wednesday we’re vibing out at Modish for a night filled with R&B and Soul, great drinks and food! Thursday for dinner we’re going to Divan for their perfectly curated salmon pasta. Friday we’re at the High Museum of Art for High Frequency Fridays to admire some art and vibe out to the DJ sets. Saturday we’re doing some shopping at Atlantic Station and grab a quick bite at Food Terminal. Later that night, we’re grabbing a bite at Rock Steady and then coming back to the hotel and turning up at the rooftop bar. To end a great week, we’re off to brunch at Roc South Cuisine (their shrimp and grits are to die for) and finishing off the day with some Sunday Funday activities at Slingshot!
When it comes to good food, good drinks, and a good time, I’ma have it!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost, I wouldn’t be where I am without God. I thank Him daily for the gifts and talents He has blessed me with and I pray for the strength to steward over them properly. I of course want to shout out my parents who have always been my biggest supporters with any creative venture I’ve wanted to do. They would come through with the necessary tools and equipment critical to my success. Want to be a fashion designer? Here’s a sewing machine. Want to start a Youtube channel? Here’s a camera. Want to be DJ? Here’s a controller, speaker, and wireless microphone for you to get started. My Uncle Richard also played a huge role in my DJ career. He paid for my Serato software, bought me a stand for my laptop, and essentially taught me basic mixing skills. It is essentially their investment in me that has gotten me to where I am today.
Big shoutout to everyone in the DJ community, ESPECIALLY THE FEMALE DJs! We are certainly on the up and up in a male dominated industry, and I’m inspired by every single one of you. Whether you’ve been in the game for a few months or a few years, keep up the amazing work!
