We had the good fortune of connecting with Min Heong Hong and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Min Heong, we’d love to hear what makes you happy.
That’s an intriguing question since the pursuit of happiness is central to my life’s journey. Lately, I’ve found myself pondering what true happiness means to me, crafting my own definition.
I feel happy in life’s simple pleasures: a kind exchange with a cashier at the grocery store, a thoughtful gesture from a friend on an ordinary day, or the comfort of slipping into my favorite pajamas after a refreshing shower, enveloped in the scent of my preferred room spray.
Reflecting on these moments, I’ve realized that happiness often stems from feeling respected and valued by others, as well as by myself. True happiness, I believe, is more subtle, a gentle upliftment in the midst of routine.
I’m still navigating the depths of what happiness truly means to me. It’s a journey, evolving with each experience. Yet, there’s a beauty in the uncertainty, a sense of anticipation for what’s to come.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I take immense pride in my ability to face new challenges head-on and continuously evolve both personally and professionally. Each success and setback has contributed to my growth, fueling my excitement for the future and the prospect of further honing my skills and expertise.
Navigating my career path hasn’t been without its hurdles. Like many, I’ve encountered my share of obstacles along the way. What’s often overlooked is the unseen struggle behind the facade of success. My journey has been no exception. As an international student, I embarked on this path with a different starting point, without the same background in art and English as my peers. Adjusting to a new environment while grappling with cultural differences presented its own set of challenges.
Despite the initial hurdles, I refused to be held back by circumstances. I embraced the discomfort and committed myself to surpassing expectations. This meant stepping out of my comfort zone, even when faced with uncertainty and self-doubt.
Admittedly, I’ve made my fair share of mistakes along the way. However, each misstep served as a valuable lesson, shaping my understanding of resilience and fortitude. I’ve come to realize that it’s through adversity that true growth occurs.
My journey is a testament to my unwavering determination and willingness to seize opportunities for personal and professional development. While I may harbor regrets from time to time, I’ve learned to trust in the decisions I’ve made, knowing they were the best choices at the time.
Above all, I hope to be remembered as someone who embodies persistence and a relentless pursuit of opportunity and growth.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
How exciting! Coincidentally, one of my best friends is planning a trip to New York in September. It’ll be fantastic to show her around and make some unforgettable memories together.
While I want her to have the freedom to choose what she wants to explore, I can certainly offer some recommendations for places worth considering.
As someone who enjoys both iconic landmarks and hidden gems, I suggest starting with must-visit spots like Times Square, the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, Dumbo, and perhaps a couple of museums like The Met or MoMA.
Additionally, I’d encourage a stroll through Roosevelt Island, a relaxing break at Washington Square Park, or a visit to Summit and Gantry Plaza State Park in Long Island City, which holds a special place in my heart.
When it comes to dining experiences, here are some top picks: “Cho Dang Gol” for Kimchi Biji, “Lao Ma Spicy” for dry pot, “Peter Luger Steak House” for a mouthwatering steak, “Claudette” for delightful Salmon Benedict, and “Blue Willow” for savory Braised Pork.
And of course, we can’t forget about satisfying our cravings for coffee and desserts. I recommend checking out “Paper Coffee,” and “Teazzi Tea” for a delicious brown sugar latte, and indulging in treats from “Magnolia Bakery,” “Van Leeuwen Ice Cream,” and “Pinkberry.”
If time permits, I’d love to take her on a scenic train ride upstate. It’s a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, offering breathtaking views and a chance to recharge.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a big shoutout to all the people who’ve had a hand in shaping who I am today.
Firstly, a huge thanks to my family—my parents, brother, and sister-in-law. They’ve always been there for me, cheering me on and offering support whenever I need it.
I also want to shout out my friends, both in Korea and the U.S. They’ve accepted me for who I am and have been with me through thick and thin.
A big thank you to all the mentors who’ve guided me along the way. Their advice has been priceless, and I can’t wait to pay it forward by helping others in the future.
Last but not least, I want to acknowledge my past self. Despite facing challenges, I never gave up, and I’m proud of how far I’ve come.
To everyone who’s been a part of my journey, thank you!
