We had the good fortune of connecting with Millicent Olasanoye and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Millicent, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Over the years, I have learned that creating and having a balanced work life is essential for your mental health. In the beginning, I wasn’t consistent with my work life balance. It was important to me but I wasn’t intentional about it. My previous (and current employments), I work with individuals who have mental health diagnosis as well as other medical conditions. It’s so important to maintain a healthy lifestyle that includes addressing your self-care needs too. I make it a priority to take care of myself physically, spiritually, and emotionally. If that means, I have to change my schedule or postpone some events, then I will do that. The pandemic has changed my mindset for the better and I’m intentional about every area of my life. I only got one life to live and I will make the best of it. Some tips for self-care that I practice, find ways to relax (I love movies and Netflix), yoga/exercise, massages, and makeup tutorials (of course).

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I consider my makeup my art. Makeup is fun and it allows me to be creative in various ways. I’m most excited about my cosmetic line T.E.C. (Tulip Eyes Cosmetics). I’ve always considered myself to be unique and different; whether it was cutting up some jeans or putting safety pins on a t-shirt. Being able to be true to who I am has always been important to me. Also, because of my Nigerian background, my eyes were opened to the world of art and fashion. Of course, it hasn’t been easy. There’s always going to be challenges to face. That’s LIFE! What’s important to me is that I learn how to find different ways and tools to migrate strategically through those challenges. I want my business to match one’s personality and inspire a call for action that will unify women all over the world. I’m creating a sisterhood through my brand.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My best friend and I would definitely go to Negril Village for the delicious menu and we would stay a little to enjoy the live band. The next morning, we would visit the MLK center and the Civil Rights Museum. Before ending the week, we would go to the Coca Cola factory (we have to take pictures and buy a Coke). Our lunch spots would be at one of the great restaurants at Ponce City Market, perhaps H&F Burger or Hop’s Chicken. Lastly, we would enjoy some tranquility and relaxation at Heavenly Foot Massage. There are a lot of things to do in the city. Our itinerary would be full of cool and nice spots in the city which would include a boxing class and karaoke. The possibilities are endless.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I don’t want to exclude anyone. So, I can’t say there is a particular person or individual regarding my success. I thanked my entire family and friends for all their love and support. Whether it’s been since high school, college, or employments, I have been blessed to build lasting relationships throughout the years with people who continue to encourage me. I thank my diverse support group of beautiful people.
