We had the good fortune of connecting with Mi’Lisa Idora and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mi’Lisa Idora, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I’ve come to believe work life balance is a theoretical concept that is not rooted in reality. Throughout my entrepreneurship journey the idea of work life balance has shifted and evolved over the years. When I first stepped into entrepreneurship full time I had the freedom to pour long hours into my business. I placed my personal life on hold as I focused heavily on creating a solid foundation for my business. Although I was working long hours and passing on lots of social events I did not feel like I was missing out on anything. The energy I funneled into my business paid off in the form of financial stability. At that time in my life there was no work life balance, it was just all work, but there was harmony.
Allowing myself to release the idea of work life balance and welcome the idea of work life harmony assisted in my transition from entrepreneur to mompreneur. Now as a mompreneur, who works from home with an active toddler, my available work hours have been significantly reduced. The amount of time I had to freely pour into my business when I first began no longer exists. I still accomplish what needs to be done for myself and for my clients. It just looks a little different. Work life harmony looks like prioritizing being a present mom who takes meetings between naps and often completes deadlines after bedtime.
In another two years I’m sure my available business hours will shift yet again as my child grows older and my responsibilities change. No matter what life looks like down the road I know I can find harmony and flow between work and life.
What should our readers know about your business?
As the founder of Soulcial Therapy, I provide intuitive business coaching for Black women entrepreneurs and would-be entrepreneurs. I believe in a holistic approach to business that integrates business growth, inner wellbeing, and real-life priorities such as work, motherhood, marriage, and everything in between.
As an intuitive business coach I believe the whole woman makes the business and no parts of her are separate. As I approach my fifth year as a full-time, financially stable entrepreneur turned mompreneur I know the importance of incorporating self-care into my business strategies and regular routines. Stepping out of hustle culture and stepping into flow is how Soulcial Therapy was born. I want to empower other women to grow their businesses while prioritizing their self-care needs. It is possible to monetize your creativity and maximize your life simultaneously without burnout. By incorporating mindfulness practices, Reiki, Sound Therapy, and journaling into my coaching style my clients are able to see their businesses flourish while cultivating a deeper relationship with themselves. As they learn to trust from within new levels of clarity and confidence are unlocked in their business.
Building unity and community among women, especially Black women business owners is my love language. Through monthly Soulcial Therapy events I facilitate genuine connections and sisterhood for the purpose of business collaborations and personal growth. I recently started a new business called The Soulcare Experience with two phenomenal women. We provide intentional self-care mini retreats to nourish and reset the emotional and physical well-being of moms. Finding harmony within business and everyday life is not just something I teach, but something I live out daily.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend and I were planning a staycation in the city it would have to include the perfect mix of relaxation, fun, exploration, and food. The first thing on my list would be spending the day at Spa Land enjoying their saunas and spa treatments. They have the best full body scrubs and massages. We would end the night with dinner at Parkside District. Up next would be a day in North Georgia hiking at Tallulah Falls, Yonah Mountain, or Clouldland Canyon. An outdoor concert at Mableton Barnes Amphitheater or Lakewood Amphitheater is always a good idea. Of course for my bestie we would have to include a hot spin class at Sweat Cycle then head over to Juiceheads ATL for a fresh pressed juice. Finally, we end the weekend at Change Church followed by brunch at Capital Grill.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My success is rooted in my village. Hands down my mother, Sebrina Patton, is the first person I would like to shoutout. She is the reason I am able to go after my dreams, run my business, and be the mother I always dreamed of being. There would be no me without her. I would also like to shoutout my best friends, business besties, and business partners. Having such a solid group of women who support me personally and professionally is a gift I don’t take for granted. Verity, Mia, Brandyce, Brittnee, Charlene, and NiShée you all are real ones. And lastly I would like to thank my mentors, Beauty P. Baldwin and Meisha Lerato, for all they have poured into me throughout the years. The example they’ve set pushes me to be my best. They have allowed me to dream bigger because their lives are testaments of what is possible when commitment, faith, and purpose collide.
