We had the good fortune of connecting with Mickey Busch and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mickey, why did you pursue a creative career?
I pursued an artistic career because, for me, there is no other option. I am only interested in having enjoyable experiences in this lifetime, so I chose a career that I thought would be boundlessly fulfilling.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started doing makeup as a hobby in 2014 without any idea of what I actually wanted to do with my life. After I had some friends ask me to do their makeup, I started advertising myself as an aspiring MUA. Somebody actually told me that I was only doing it because it was the trendy thing to do (i.e the rise of influencer culture). That was what made me realize I wanted to explore the avenues of professional makeup and not just what is trending. Let your haters be your motivators.

In 2018 I went to school to become certified in Professional Makeup Application and in the same year worked on my first production. There’s a different high that comes from makeup for film vs. brides and prom girls. I often seek and welcome a challenge; working in film constantly pushes me to expand my skill set.

Although working in the film industry can be challenging, for me it feels completely natural, as if I’m instinctively doing what I was made to do.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I moved to Atlanta in the middle of 2020 and wasn’t able to explore the city much thanks to Covid. I have definitely taken out-of-town friends to EAV and L5P. I enjoy being surrounded by art every where I look, on the buildings, on the streets, in people’s individual styles and cultures, music being played on the sidewalk, somewhere people don’t all look and act the same!

If I had to add to the itinerary, we’d have to go to the Clermont. It’s obviously iconic for the lounge but the interior design is funky and refreshing and the rooftop bar has a great view. We’d also have to hit up Ponce City Market for the food and Skyline Park.

Lastly, the Botanical Garden! Since I’m new myself, I’m looking forward to exploring more of what Atlanta has to offer.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m dedicating my shoutout to my MaLou and my sister, Sammie. I am a total grandma’s girl and my sister is my best friend. I hear these women speak so highly of me, as if I’m performing miracles or something. It’s funny to me that they think I’m so cool and talented even though I feel like I have so much more to learn! Having that kind of support is both humbling and encouraging.
