We had the good fortune of connecting with Michelle “MiMi” Matthews and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Michelle “MiMi”, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind the success of my brand is consistency. I continue to show up for myself and my community even if I need to take a small break. If you can continue to show up with valuable information success is inevitable. I don’t take it for granted that my people are looking forward to content that will help them in their career advancement journey.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
RBG Royalty started out as a career empowerment brand where writing resumés was the most requested service by mostly people of color who needed help understanding the value of their experiences. Since then I have pivoted and began career coaching so that I can focus more on helping people build the self-confidence they need to land new positions. It has been challenging because I am always referenced for writing resumés and it’s hard to turn people away who I know could benefit from my help. That also in turn makes the rebranding a bit more challenging because I’m already known for writing. However, I’m working to overcome that by continuing to show my value as a career coach. The lesson I’ve learned during all of this is that it’s okay to pivot but have a plan in place because you’re going to need it. I would like the world to know that RBG Royalty is the home of where business meets empowerment and it will continue to serve people who need help recognizing how valuable they are to employers in their industry of choice. This brand was started to build people up and to help them achieve success in their careers.

Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
I’m from Chicago and there are numerous places here that you can have a good time at. I would recommend eating from Truth Italian Restaurant, Batter and Berries, Uncle Remus Chicken, and Mr. Brown Lounge. There’s a tiny spot that I’ve always love to have drinks at called The Blue Note, they play great music too. If everything was back to normal visiting Navy Pier, Maggie Daley Park, Lake Michigan, and the Garfield Park Conservatory would be great places to see. The city really has a lot to offer.k

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My village is amazing! I am always encouraged to go hard for my brand and to keep taking chances on myself. If I’m going to accredit anything outside of those closest to me it would be Tobe Nwigwe and his team along with the late Nipsey Hussle. I listen to their music just about every day to remind myself that what I’m building has a purpose that is greater than myself. The consistency and discipline that I know it takes to run the brands they built are inspiring. Not to mention neither of them ever compromised their character to become successful.
