We had the good fortune of connecting with Michelle Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michelle, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
I started 757’s Got Talent in August of 2015. I had so many talented friends I felt were not receiving the support they deserved, and through sharing their art, it led me down the path of discovering so many hidden gems living so close to home! I’ve curated open mics, Latin Dancing events, and a skate party to promote local artists and small businesses.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Music has been a huge part of my life for longer than I can remember. I created my first song at 4 years old. It wasn’t until my late 20s (after a work injury) that I started to focus more on singing. Despite the circumstances, it has been one of the greatest blessings yet! Some of my proudest moments are being flown across the country to represent Virginia in the World Karaoke Championship (2018) and to perform with MOER Acousic for a wedding (2023).
I am on the journey of conquering self-doubt. I questioned the value of my voice for a long time. Friends and strangers would always compliment me, but not until recently was I able to fully receive the positive words. Through this musical journey, I’ve learned that no one has the power to dim my light but me, and day by day it shines brighter.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The first place I would go is my favorite Brunch spot: Happy Cafe! It’s a family owned restaurant, and everything on the menu is A-1. I would also to to Mt Trashmore (literally a mountain made out of trash) to walk around and enjoy the outside for a bit. For lunch I would choose Cltr Vegan Lounge. It’s so good, won’t miss the meat! TASTE and Desmond’s Island Grill are some more of my go- tos in the area! All locally based. I love being active and having fun, so the indoor skydiving at iFly would definitely be on the list. Since iFly is only a block or two from the Oceanfront, we could grab Ice Cream from The Sweet Spot and walk on “The Strip”. There’s an Old Time Photos place I would love to check out. I also have many friends who perform, so we could walk by to support them so also. Last but not least, we could end the night at The Rican Chef by Latin Dancing.¡Wepa!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My biggest shout-out goes to God. I am so grateful for the people and experiences I’ve been exposed through my voice. Fusion Groove, MOER (Acousic), and now Seamless have all helped me to build my confidence as a singer. My friends-turned-family have been there every step of the way: Melissa F, Kenya P, Diana T, Priyangka M, Alito M, Paul B, Tommy J, and so many others. I love and appreciate you all.
