Meet Michaela Brown | Creative & Aspiring Costume Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Michaela Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.
This is the ever-evolving Michaela Brown.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As of right now, I’m uncovering what I want my different art forms to be. My current art form is fashion. I’m fascinated by how self-expressive styling is, the emotions that can be evoked from fashion aesthetics created, and the story that can be created around a single garment. What sets me apart would have to be my warm demeanor, vivacious energy, and adventurous spirit. I’m curious, confident, ambitious, and caring towards others. I aim to continue to invest in myself to thrive as an individual and hope to help others do the same. I’m most excited ( and a bit nervous) about pursuing my creative career in costume design and other artistic pursuits full-time. My path in deciding to allow my creative side to fully take root was not easy and still isn’t at times. Anxiety and perfectionism are challenges I face, but I remember that faith, self-compassion, and a strong work ethic can take you into the right spaces. The lessons I’ve learned so far have been to rest in knowing that things always work out in the end, redirection can help you get realigned, and your life should be one that you’re proud of. What I want the world to know about myself, my story, and my brand is that it’s being developed with self-awareness, self-love, empathy, and sincerity.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Ouuuu, this is a fun question! I do have a best friend, and her name is Kayla. If I wanted to show her the best time ever, I’d first see if she could come to Raleigh in April for Dreamville. Dreamville is the BIGGEST and BEST event to go to for great music, good times, and an amazing vibe. If she couldn’t come to that, then a weekend itinerary would include me bringing her to ParTee Shack for an exciting and competitive game of mini golf. Next, we’d attend a mid-afternoon art class at ArtSpace. Afterward, we’d go shopping at Urban Outfitters to put together an outfit for dinner. Now, before we head to dinner, we’ll take some time to capture each other’s best angles and “star-studded” poses with a digital camera. Then, we’d head over to Bazil Indian Cuisine for some delicious, flavor-packed Indian food. For dessert, I’d bring her to Funnel Me Crazy for a top-notch funnel cake! Lastly, we’d end the night at BoxCar+Arcade for fun games and music.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Absolutely!! So, first and foremost, I want to thank Jehovah God for all he’s done for me, what he’s currently doing for me, and what he has in store for me in the future. Next, I want to thank my parents. They are the funniest and most amazing parent duo I could’ve been blessed with. I can always count on them for timely advice (even at times when I may not want to hear it), guidance, support, and endless amounts of love. The values they’ve instilled within me will continue to take me far. Moving to siblings and extended family members, I’d like to thank them for loving, supporting, and encouraging me. Then, I want to thank my beautiful friends for being authentic individuals to whom I can vent to, who can motivate me and remind me of how dope I am, all while making me laugh. Lastly, I want to thank my student success coach, career coach, and therapist at Wake Tech for the clarity they’ve helped me establish within my academic and personal life.
