We had the good fortune of connecting with Michaela Bidon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michaela, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I’ve come to find evolving as an artist isn’t about learning to take less risks or smarter risks– it’s about seeing risk taking as a tool that pushes you forward. It’s one hell of a tool to have in your arsenal. Risk taking is at the beating heart of being an artist, especially when working in entertainment. Every project/decision/action you take is a risk. The only “wrong” risks to take are the ones that sacrifice your artistic integrity. Whenever I’m scared to try something, I like to remind myself that even not taking any risks, staying in the comfort zone, is a risk in itself– and it’s a doozy to recover from.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a multi-hyphen– I focus on being a producer & a post-production specialist for the two worlds of film and sports broadcasting. I initially wanted to go into musical theatre and attend FSU, but my high school AV teacher saw my talents in other areas, such as editing and putting together quick & creative content. The first films I ever made were skits advertising my theatre program’s plays; I did the whole shebang on my phone and 2016 Adobe suite. My teacher suggested I apply to SCAD– no, now that I remember it, he more of mandated it. While this is definitely not an advertisement for SCAD (they already have a huge admissions campaign), this new creative environment allowed me the safe space to experiment, to learn who I was, and to take risks.
Back to what I do now, I am a creative producer that thrives off of creating bold, integral films. I have supported the dreams of many directors while holding the safety of cast, crew, and the entire production on my shoulders. I also double dip in broadcasting, specifically in live switching a school talk show “Too Late with Andrew Badami” and co-founding SCAD’s first sports desk program. My current job changes like the wind, but one thing that will never change is my passion and dedication to telling impactful stories.
I am currently working on two very unique projects near and dear to my heart. (cue the shameless plug!!)
-Soeur Celeste is a narrative short film premiering May 2025 that celebrates the magic of sisterhood and unveils the illusion that is perfection. I am the Creative Producer for this drama to be shot in Savannah, GA. (@soeur_celeste on Instagram)
-The Bee’s Knees is SCAD’s first ever sports desk and I am its proud showrunner & co-founder. We strive to bring our student athletes centerstage and use our creative hive mind to produce a Student-Emmy worthy sports desk show.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would definitely take them for an eat & nature walk retreat. Savannah is a place rich with yummy foods and stimulating atmospheres. There’s a go-to food place for every mood: Good coffee & city vibes? Franklin’s. Pizza & exploring? Vinnie Van Gogo’s. Thai food that’ll make you yap for hours? PJ Thai’s. Espresso martini & cake? Better than Sex Dessert Bar. Being a student where my classes are in a hub of locally owned eateries most definitely has its perks: there’s always somewhere to go.
After choosing from a catalog of cuisine, I would lead them to the best closest view. Whether that’s biking in Forsyth Park, picnicking at Tybee Island, or even sneaking to the top of the DeSoto hotel. I’ll always see what movie the Lucas Theatre is showing that week. My favorite thing to do to kill time is to walk around downtown like a self-guided tourist or vagabond.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mom and dad, Marlee & Thierry. That may be a cliche, but there isn’t a truer answer. My mom taught me to be a woman of grace, charm, and compassion. My dad taught me to always have drive and a love for life. They both instilled in me how to go after what I want like a soccer goalie chasing the ball (I actually played a goalie in school, so I thought it’d apply).
I’ll also shout out to my peers and professors at the Savannah College of Art and Design. The nurturing “yes, and…” energy I feel buzzing amongst us creatives has transformed the way I approach my work forever. To name a few names, Professors of Film & Television Greg Viens and Chris Donahue, my best friends Raven and Lola, and my work brother Andy Knowles.
