We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael Toliver and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Michael, why did you pursue a creative career?
Years ago, I watched my first movie, “7” with Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman, and it sparked a flame in me for acting. I turned to my mom and declared my dream of becoming an actor, but she insisted on the traditional route of schooling and a steady job. Despite her discouragement, the desire to pursue acting lingered within me, though I lacked the confidence to chase it. It wasn’t until my 30s that I finally found the courage to pursue my passion. Acting was always the missing piece, and despite the uncertainties, I decided to take the leap and go for it.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What distinguishes me from others is my unwavering commitment and relentless work ethic. I’m the kind of person who, once I set my sights on something, will stop at nothing to achieve it. This journey demands patience, practice, and sacrifice, but I firmly believe that if I set my mind to something, I can attain it. It’s a path fraught with challenges, where rejection often precedes acceptance, and where judgment may outweigh praise. Yet, through it all, I remain steadfast and resolute, relying on a combination of faith and hard work to propel me forward. Since embarking on this journey in 2018, I’ve taken on numerous background roles, including many unpaid projects and enduring stretches on set that lasted nearly 24 hours. One memorable experience stands out: my first commercial shoot in Oklahoma for the OK Lottery company. Initially, I assumed I’d simply be a background presence. However, to my surprise, the makeup artist sought me out, revealing that they wanted me in front of the camera because they appreciated my look. It was a moment of validation, a reminder that I had something valuable to offer in this industry. I’ve learned that when a project seeks you out, it’s because they recognize something special within you, even if you can’t see it yourself. I urge anyone embarking on a similar journey to approach each opportunity with confidence, knowing that they were chosen for a reason. In the grand scheme of things, every step is purposeful, and as I firmly believe, God never makes mistakes.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When it comes to indulging in hearty meals, especially soul food, I’ve got a couple of go-to spots. If you’re in the mood for some finger-lickin’ good fried chicken paired with creamy macaroni and cheese and a side of cornbread, you can’t go wrong with the Busy Bee Cafe. It’s a gem for soulful flavors that never disappoint. And when the craving for something sweet hits, Revolution Donuts is where it’s at. Whether you’re into classic glazed or prefer a fruity twist like grape jelly, they’ve got you covered. But beyond just satisfying my taste buds, I’m all about immersing myself in the richness of our culture, whether through food, music, or film. That’s why the Trap Museum it’s a tribute to our roots and the impact of our art on the world. And for those nights when you want to unwind or let loose with friends, RT 60 is the spot to be. Whether you’re looking for a cozy vibe with your significant other or aiming to dance the night away, it’s a hotspot for memorable moments and good times.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The journey of pursuing my acting career has been greatly influenced by the remarkable individuals I grew up with, such as James Joffrion Chris Chapman, Michael Burden, and William Andrews. Witnessing their achievements and seeing them conquer their own goals has been a driving force for me to strive for success in my own endeavors. Having a 13-year-old son, whose birthday is this month, adds an extra layer of motivation. As he observes my journey, I hope to inspire him to pursue his dreams fearlessly. Growing up without a father figure to look up to, I am determined to be a role model for him and show him that anything is possible with dedication and hard work. My wife, my steadfast supporter, stands by my side through every twist and turn, serving as my rock and my guiding light. Together, we navigate the challenges of my career, and she remains my unwavering source of strength and encouragement—truly, my right hand in this journey.
