We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael Paul and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michael, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I’m from Wilmington NC. I was raised in a Christian home, where my Father laid the foundation for me to pray, believe and have faith. My Father and grandparents were/are hard workers and instilled in me that if it is something I want, I will have to work hard for it, nothing comes easy.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a stylist that focuses on healthy hair care and providing clients with one on one service time, meaning I’m not playing musical chairs with my clients. I also pride myself on keeping and maintaining a professional environment for my clients. I believe this is what sets me apart from others. What I am most excited and proud of is the transformation my clients receive and their confidence level boosted. See what I have learned is a piece of me goes with that client everywhere they go: family functions, photo shoots, dates, etc. I have a part in enhancing their beauty. I absolutely love it. How I got where I am today professionally was not easy, it took a lot of WORK!!! Some sleepless nights, tears because I felt as if I should have been further than where I am/was, fighting through crazy thoughts in my mind like, is this for me, did I choose the right career path. But I continued to push through. I overcame and am overcoming the challenges that were and are before me because I have a strong support system, people that believe in me and my dream, that means the world to me. One of the lessons I have learned is, throughout this process of reaching goals and achieving your dreams it’s not easy but if you continue to push through and accomplish small goals along the way you have no choice but to succeed. As my Pastor Ronald Wilson always say, “You Will Win if You Don’t Quit”. I have also learned that when you try something and it doesn’t work or go according to plan, it is not a failure, it is a lesson, a teachable moment. What I want people to know about me is I am no different from the next person, you too can achieve your goals, you just have to work hard and continue to persevere through every obstacle.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When my friends come to town we like to have fun as we are kids at heart. We are going to the shooting range, then possibly the batting cage, the arcade, we would go to this seafood restaurant called Red Crab, and then we can go downtown and have fun doing the different activities they have like table tennis, fools ball, and putt putt golf, then to end the day we would go to this dessert location called Cheesecakes by Alex.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to give a shoutout to my wife Tahijia (Tee) Newkirk, thank you for always believing in me and pushing me to continue in those times when I didn’t believe in myself. To my son, Davionn (DJ) Gayles you were part of the reason I pushed forward in those times I wanted to give up, thank you. To my father, Orlando Newkirk thank you for teaching me how to be strong and push through, during tough situations. And to my Pastors Ronald and Rachel Wilson, thank you for continually pushing, praying and being there for me in the highs and lows of my career, I love you both.
