We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael Morgan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michael, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process for starting A Few Good MENtors, Inc. (AFGM) was to help wake people up to the power of mentoring. This is accomplished through our integrity, faith and dedication. After 36 years of working for the FBI I would not have made it without the assistance of my parents and several other male mentors, both professional and personal mentors. I also, volunteered with Big Brother Big Sister which allowed me to see a need for more male mentors in our communities. AFGM is designed to help our young men live productive lives through a consistent network of men to help them along the way.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
As I have said earlier, I spent 36 years in the FBI training and mentoring employees. I was very fortunate to find a career that I enjoyed, and I was very good at it. Through hard work and prayer, I was able to overcome racism from managers and even co-workers. Some of the lessons I learned were to put God first in everything you do. having a solid faith foundation helped me overcome obstacles at work and in my personal life. What I want people to learn about me and my story is that it really does take a village to navigate life. You cannot be successful by yourself.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am not from Atlanta, but I’ve been there so many times I consider it my second home. So, I can answer this question from my viewpoint and for me it always starts with visiting the following locations.
You can catch the Braves at the Battery! If there was a little time to spare you can check out the eateries and shopping at the stadium. Wake up early the next morning to experience a fun day of adventure at the Georgia Aquarium and World of Coca-Cola Museum. After all of that adventure I’m sure you will be hungry, so you can check out the Varsity. The next day you can take a stroll through the Historic Centennial Olympic Park and walk across the street to the CNN Center. While you are getting the latest news grab a bite to eat in their food court. The next day you can visit all of you furry friends at Zoo Atlanta and then take a stroll in the past by visiting the National Center for Civil and Human Rights. The next day you can experience the MLK Jr. National Historic Park and then sail into the college spirit by visits the AUC, where three of the most prestigious HBCUs are housed. You can stay fit and conquer Stone Mountain National Park. You can end your trip by dressing up and enjoying a ride on the huge Ferris Wheel and then an evening of fine dining at the Sun Dial, where you get to see the beautiful city from 72 floors high. Welcome to Atlanta!
I also like Paschal’s Soulfood, St. Regis Spa and Chateau Elan Winery.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shoutout the faith-based community in Atlanta they have truly stood with us in what we are attempting to accomplish in the Atlanta metro area. I especially want to thank and give a huge acknowledgement to Pastor Matthew Jenkins of Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church. He has always supported our mentoring efforts and is assisting us as we get established.
