We had the good fortune of connecting with Mia Sims and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mia, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Sims Family Flower Farm was born out of passion and purpose.
After feeling like I had been trudging through a ten-year career in Hospitality Sales and Marketing, I realized I didn’t belong in Corporate America. I initially wanted to attribute this to various general statistics related to my demographics, but I knew deep down that the issue was more intrinsic. I wrestled with the elements of my career that I enjoyed and weighed them against my hobbies that had grown into passions, as I embraced my inner self as a creative, new mother. With a desire for work and a love of cultivation, I was able to create both a new niche and a family business.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Sims Family Flower Farm is bold and courageous in the face of change.
Starting, I knew only a few things: I could grow flowers, I loved growing flowers, and flowers are a decent cash crop. We had a couple of raised garden beds and a 500 sqft plot in the backyard of my father-in-law’s house (whom we were living with at the time), and I spent my first two hundred dollars on seeds in February of 2023. The next 12 months would be an endless cycle of research, then trial and error. I came up with a business model, and after a few weeks of $0 sales, scrapped it. I developed a second model, and after three months of $0 sales, I scrapped that one, too. I would like to say that I didn’t think to give up, but in fact, I went on several interviews. However, I pride myself on being fearless in the face of change and see each setback as I see them in life: as an opportunity to restart. I repositioned, maybe a few more times, and finally found a way to merge my unique experience with my dream job.
Embracing both experience and passion, we offer digital marketing inclusions, planned activations, and guest interactions customized for hotels, restaurants, venues, and other hospitality partners! As of now, we do not know of any other florists or flower farms offering these inclusions with floral design services. Our partners are reassured that we can cultivate creative solutions — and soon, custom genetics for their unique brand! Being immersed in the hospitality industry as an individual and also as a family, we can keep both guests and the bottom line in mind. We are experienced in working directly with ownership, management companies, and asset managers and set a new level of expectation for your vendor relationships.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
During my time in the hospitality industry, I had two incredible mentors. One in my early career, Ms. Darling, saw my true potential behind a hotel front desk. In 8 months, she had promoted me twice, betting only on my personality and my promise to work harder and learn faster than anyone else. She nurtured my independence and instilled a confidence that no one else bothered to acknowledge!
Fast forward a few years, and a few cross-country moves later, I found myself in Midtown Atlanta, working for someone I believe to be the world’s “REAL” best boss, Mrs. Elwood! Mrs. Elwood patiently smoothed any and all rough edges I came with, by having an open-door policy, and what seemed to be an endless amount of time to develop her staff. She taught me the value of professionalism and how confidence can be quiet.
Ms. Darling is now in Fort Lauderdale, FL. and Mrs. Elwood still works in the ATL area
