We had the good fortune of connecting with Mia Rivera-Reed and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mia, how do you think about risk?
I think risk is necessary for living your life to its full potential . You’ll never really know what you’re made for until you take a risk of going towards the unknown. I think risk can be associated with chance. If there is a chance you succeed from taking a risk, wouldn’t that be worth the risk?

I like to call the risk I take as calculated risks. I take calculated risks towards the things that peak my interest, the things that make me wonder if I can have more in this life, and the things that bring me pure happiness. I’ve been musically inclined since my childhood, as well as eccentric and authentic growing up to my present age now. I’m currently 25 and have graduated college with a Bachelors degree in Business Finance, the first one to ever do that in my family. From being fresh out of college to now, I spent 3 years taking risks, but they weren’t calculated. A lot of things failed or didn’t work out the way I thought it would, but that’s because I was looking at the risks I took in the wrong light. It took me shifting my understanding of what it means to take a risk, to then start making the best moves possible that align to what I believe in.

Risk isn’t just about leaping blindly into something in hopes for the best outcome. A true calculated risk is the risk you take when your mind, heart, body, and soul all agree that something is right for you. When you are aligned with your values, and the things that bring you happiness, the answer is clear. Once I understood that, I decided to start taking a risk towards the entrepreneurial lifestyle. I currently work a 9-5 that I do like, however with my wild child spirit, I decided that I wanted to start my own small business called RoseColoredEnvy, where I promote and sell different types of handbags and purses. Another risk I took was to be open and share my poetry and creative skills, as well as my journey towards becoming a musical artist. This all happened because I made a calculated risk to put myself out there, to not let fear or myself hold me back from greatness. Risk can be a good thing, it challenges us to perceive our world and the possibilities differently.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Professionally, I work as an AR Specialist in corporate America, as well as owning my own small business RoseColoredEnvy LLC and being an artist on the side.

It’s a lot of work to maintain and build the foundation I’ve created for my career. My work opportunity was perfectly aligned with me at the time I was looking for work. I went from getting paid barely anything to getting help to fix my resume up and getting professional advice from a couple of mentors, shoutout to Christopher Sims. A lot of jobs need you to have a certain level of experience and certificates to solidify your chance of being hired, I’m glad I invested in my education. I was hired at a trade show company where we host Veterinarian show events where anyone that is in school to be a veterinarian can obtain CE credits from attending our show. There are many vendors and Veterinarian offices that exhibit as well as doctors who hosts a variety of seminars. Another plus side is you get to see dogs and cats at our shows. I love animals and while learning more about the company before I was hired, I was drawn to it because of the common goal of educating many and getting people together. The shows are great and connecting with people from all over has been a blessing.

My business RoseColoredEnvy came about at a time where I felt isolated, where I let a lot of bad thoughts and habits take control of my reality. I noticed that those around me had all disappeared, and I was left with myself to look at. I looked at the times I neglected myself, and let others neglect me and our relationship. I looked at all the dreams I’ve had and kept to myself, and, the dreams I shared with others who didn’t seem to support my vision or progress. The ones who love me have always been supporters so I’m grateful for them. However those experiences showed me that I was perceiving those around me in the wrong light, I was perceiving myself in the wrong light. I had to metaphorical take off my rose-colored glasses and see the truth, not only about myself but about others. A lot of people were not happy for me, and I started to see it in their eyes and feel it when I went around them. Envy and jealousy is what I saw but it was masked with a smile. I decided to take those looks, the feelings I felt and the feelings they felt and combined them into what I call RoseColoredEnvy.

The purpose of RoseColoredEnvy is encourage those to dream of the life you want, even if you get inspired from others, and go obtain that life that you see for yourself. If you want it, go get, regardless of who else has it, or who doesn’t like it for you. Once you get it, you own it and you own your power within it. I love the fashion world, and have played with the thought of selling bags in the past because of how many I had in different styles and colors. I did research on the different types of bags, materials, patterns, and color schemes as well as deepening my understanding of the purpose of a bag, and that’s to protect the things you hold that are valuable and important to you. If you lost your wallet/money or your house keys, that would leave you worried and stressed, that’s why bags were created. Bags are to insure all your possessions stay on you so you don’t have to worry about losing anything or holding anything in your hands or pockets. Not only that, a bag is the perfect accessory for many outfits whether it be a clutch, messenger bag, a baguette, a cross body fanny pack, a satchel or a backpack.

Being a business owner, I’m learning that time management is important and dedicating time to my business has to be a top priority in order for it to flourish the way I want it to. I am still learning more regarding being open and vocal about my business as well as coming up with fun innovative ways to increase traffic to my shop. It’s all a learning process but the goal is to keep moving forward.

My brand comes from a place of self perseverance, and self belief that I can create the most beautiful world possible for myself. I hope to inspire others to do the same, show support to those whose are trying, and raise attention to my community about how important it is to lead with love and do everything from a place of love, not only for yourself but for others.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my bestie was visiting for week, first we have to go to Beans and Leaves (in Staten Island), and get some tea and coffee along with a waffle and catch up on life. I want to hear about her goals, her latest routine, what book is she into, pictures of fun moments and vice versa. I enjoyed spending time with my friends and having fun so we have to go to Dave and Busters or even a trampoline park like Urban Air to get our energy circulating and release our worries. I love scary movies so we definitely have to go to an eat-in movie theater in Brooklyn. With the BK and Manhattan they both have some nice spots for partying and dancing as well as karaoke, but I’d suggest something around 5th ave in Manhattan since there are a lot of choices. Let’s fit in a spa day a Soja Spa in Jersey or ZZ day spa in NY, relaxing is important, and a facial is necessary. A final complete day with my bestie is a game night with a couple of other friends, where everyone brings their own food that they want to eat or we can order together, we’ll get the drinks and snacks, and have a fun time playing monopoly, and cards against humanity.

The most exciting things I’d love to do out of my home town with my bestie and would recommend to others would be ATV tours, paintball tournaments, hiking, sip and paint, archery and karaoke. It’s fun to play, and that’s what bonds us together.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost, none of the good I’ve done and the goals I’ve accomplished wouldn’t have happened without the energetic support and love from God and my ancestors who’ve come before me. Even when there was darkness around me, there was a light at the end of the tunnel and I was nudged towards seeing the truth about myself, my family, my world, and this world. I recognize the purpose and the mission we are on to make this world a better and beautiful place where our kids can be free to live and dream.

I’d like to shoutout Tanayah Thomas aka Twiiise, she has truly been a powerhouse, a light and a guide for many people in our community. Not only does she inspire me, she has also been a great supporter and guide for anyone who wants to make a difference. She’s a true activist that is blessed, and can help bring about change in our world.

I’d also like to shoutout Omari Dejesus aka Shaolin Prince, he is a powerful, bright and impactful individual who helps new artists in the community grow and shape themselves into the artist they envision in their mind. He is inspiring and influential to not only me but to many in our community. He’s also going to help bring many further into a better future.

A book that has changed my life is The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz.
